So my husband and I got married 10 days ago and now I'm really confused about this AOS process. You'd think it'd get less complicated after he's here, but I guess not! Basically I know I have to file it ASAP and that it involves a lot of papers. Can someone give me a run-down of the steps/checklist of papers as well as the costs of things? I need to budget and I don't even know where to start. Also, do I need to send in a certified copy of my marriage certificate, or can I just copy the certified copy I have and send the copied copy (sorry about all the "copy"s). Please help! helpsmilie.gif

There's a guide here, how far have you got through that?: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos

There's no frantic rush - you were required to get married within 90 days, but you can take your time to put together the AoS package properly. :) Don't panic.

It is $1070 and is is VERY important that people know this beforehand. While there is no deadline to AOS, until you do so the immigrant will not be able to work, not be able to drive, not be able to travel abroad, and many other things. Filing ASAP is the best plan.

All K-1 people, please know that AOS is $1070 and PLAN accordingly!

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

+1 completely agree. Just wanted the OP to be less stressed, so they don't rush and submit their paperwork improperly. :(

The instructions say you can send a copy, but some on here have gotten RFEs in the past asking for an original or certified copy.

May I ask a related question on this thread? My stepson-to-be is under 14 and is therefore not required to have fingerprints taken. So would his fee be less? Curious because we like to plan ahead. :)

Do I have to pay that all at once, or in steps?

$1070 in full, together with your AOS package sent in.

Ughhh dead.gif and I thought my pocketbook would get a slight break after the nearly $1,000 we spent in the K1 process, the $2,500 in plane tickets and the $10,000 wedding. I guess not! sad.png

You will also have to file Removal of Conditions before Citizenship.

Jeanna: Children under 14 also have a slight reduction in fees, I believe. You can check in the I-485 instructions. There is also a K-2 thread pinned in this forum. I know some children are only like $600 when filing with their parent's AOS but I am not sure all the cut offs.

The fees for those under 14 are on this page under Special Instructions > http://www.uscis.gov/i-485

For applicants under 14 years of age:
  • Filing with the I-485 application of at least one parent have a fee total of $635

Before citizenship you have to remove conditions.

Follow the guides as listed above and you won't have any problems, be sure not to send any original documents i.e. your certified marriage certificate. I would suggest you send front and back, color copies. Be sure to make a copy of everything you send and a backup on your computer also. Check and double check everything including the check information and the amount so you will not get any RFE's. You will be fine, good luck.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.
