I don't get this whole "everyone I disagree with must be a <<insert political opponent label of choice". To say it's a lazy comment is an insult to lazy people.

Some people read headlines about this guy and conjure up a romantic 'Robin Hood-esque' fantasy about a courageous sheriff fighting crime while being beset by 'liberal do-gooders' and interfering politicians.

On the other hand some people read a bit deeper into the guy and come to entirely different conclusions. It really is that simple.

When you read about abuses of prisoners in his jails, multiple suspicious deaths in custody, 10's of millions of $$$ being paid out in wrongful death suits, misappropriation of funds, bullying political opponents (using law enforcement to spy and harrass on people) and failing to investigate serious crimes - the picture becomes a bit darker.

He's a crook.

Sounds just like the Federal Government, then

El Paso is an armed camp now. Maybe a lot of that cities crime success is because the Feds presence. Phoenix not near so much Fed protection. South of I-10 is well secured through Arizona. Amazing what that Sheriff has accomplished with the meager resources he has compared to the Feds.

Here's a county that is mere feet from one of the most dangerous cities in the world:

Crime Trends

Over the preceding 10 years, crime data were available in El Paso County, Texas for all 10 years. During that time frame, reported crime in El Paso County has lessened by 45%. During the same interval, violent crime decreased by 36%. On the whole, the crime figures reflect a slight reduction in crime over the last 10 years in El Paso County. If the current trend continues, predicted crime numbers could fall to twenty-one thousand for El Paso County, Texas in 2009.

Keep in mind that these graphs show reported crime numbers and certain sharp changes in crime figures might be the result of changes in reporting, not actual changes in crime rates.

That Sheriff seems to accomplish his goals without making people wear pink underwear or have his name in the news 24/7.

Doesn't seem like he's accomplished anything as far as bringing down crime in his community based on the data I've provided. Has has accomplished alot if you measure a person by how they degrade people and give 1000s of self serving media interviews. In that regard, he is unmatched.

He's basically just a glorified prison warden anyway. He has little to with actual law enforcement in Maricopa county. More than 75% his budget is jail operations.

Plus the farmers that own those sheep ... and most of the rest of the residents of Maricopa County, AZ. wink.png

Another example of the absolute stupidity of the American electorate. Vote for a guy that runs his mouth about how great he is, yet does little to actually bring down crime.

Maybe they looked at each of his opponents and thought, "Oh, #######! They'll be even worse!"

It won't be the first time that's happened.

rofl.gif I didn't consider that. That's a definite possibility.
