Driver's license renewal with EAD card

Hi All,

So I just got my EAD card and went to the local DMV in Maryland to renew my license which expired when the I-194 on my K-1 expired.

The person at the DMV typed in my card info on their computer but it didn't work so they had to call Homeland Security. They told me they'd call me back when DHS calls the DMV.

Has this happened to anyone? Any idea how long this will take? Is there anything I can do on my end to speed this up? Sucks to not be able to renew my license because some system isn't talking to another system.

Thanks!

The same thing happened to my husband at the Maryland MVA, and on the same day. The MVA worker said it was happening to all of the non-US citizens that day, and that they would send him a letter within a week telling him to come back and get his license. He hasn't received the letter yet. Have you heard anything?

It also took him five weeks to get a new social security card because his info had to be verified through DHS, and between learner's permit and driver's license attempts, this was his 9th trip to the MVA in a year.

Best of luck to you.

Has to be a state related issue, with Wisconsin, showing a valid green card, what the hell is a one year extension, so would not renew my wife's driver's license. Really got ticked off and call the governors office. Put a new guy in charge of immigration that didn't know anything about immigration. After a week of daily one hour calls with him, finally contacted our local DMV office and told them to renew her license.

But at first, would only renew it to the expiration date on her I-751 one year extension. Got on the phone again, maybe I wore them down, noted for this. They renewed her license for the full eight years.

This is how our timing worked, she received her probationary three year drivers' license four months before her conditional green card. So it expired four months before she could apply for US citizenship. Since she checked that box, was with her that she is an LPR, she had to show a valid green card. So it was just four months later she became a US citizen with her certificate.

After all this hassle with our DMV, took her certificate into our DMV office and showed it to them. Said I didn't have to do that, all she has to do is to check that US citizen box. So I replied if she checks that LPR box, she has to show her green card, but if she checks that US citizenship box, she doesn't have to show any proof? Got a dumb look from the agent, but yes, that is the way with it.

Can only conclude we are governed by complete idiots. And while I was there, an applicant said he never received his birth certificate, but claimed to be a US citizen. Was just told to go home and bring in a utility bill with his name on it.

Many people on this board got into trouble by their DMV office assuming they were US citizens and also registered them to vote. A huge no-no with the USCIS.

Shaking my head.

NickD, I don't expect it's any consolation, but in Maryland no one would ever get away with just checking the "US citizen" box with no proof. A co-worker of mine was even told that her original Maryland birth certificate wasn't good enough, and that she'd have to pay to get one in some new format. Fortunately she was able to use her passport instead.
