Well i took my little girl to the dentist, they said she needed 3 fillings. She went in there all happy and excited about having a dentist.... when i take her in March, she is going to be excited, only to be hurt.

:crying:

We have found a really good children's dentist in PA and are taking her there in March, they have sedation etc.

I feel so ####### about this, bless her heart she is 5....... I have been crying on and off for a day and last night i could not sleep. I'm a little depressed as it is and this seems to have made it worse.

I just cant imagine her having to go through all that pain :( I know it has to be done through. I brush her teeth real well, maybe its just genetic, i really don't know.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I feel really down and upset about this and cant stop thinking about it, its driving me nuts.

I wouldn't feel badly. Every child has to do something liket his. It could be totally worse! IT could be like..three root canals - or a major surgery. Hang in there.

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

This is not something to be hysterical and depressed about. Your daughter will sense your unease and it will make her fearful of something that is not awful! I have 3 kids - 11, 8 & 7...they have all had fillings at one point or another, none cried or freaked out in any way at all...in fact, my one son had some at age 3 cos when he was born he needed powerful meds that made his enamel weak and he didn't bat an eye at the drilling or filling. Seriously, you need to chill out, stop beating your self up about this. Be glad that you caught the problem early and have taken action! You are not a bad mom, so relax!!!!!! Really!!!!!

My son has a filling. He's 12. In fact, he had it done without anesthetic. The dentist said it was not deep so an anesthetic would be overkill. He went slowly and asked my son to tell him if it hurt. It didn't. Saved him walking around with a numb mouth for 4 hours afterwards.

I thought he was really brave. BUT I didn't show my personal worries about it. He would have picked up on that.

Dental practices have come a long way in the last few years and dentists are extremely sensitive to patients that are children. They know how to handle the process so that children have as little fear as possible and no pain whatsoever.

Cavities in children is a normal thing and you shouldn't be so hard on yourself. Just put it out of your mind and try not to show your upset to your child because that will only make it worse for her. Be strong for her and it will all work out.

I practically lived at the dentist's office with my 3 kids...... it was either a check-up, cleaning, fillings, and then, finally braces, which required so many visits over many years. They are all grown now, have beautiful teeth..... and my 19-year-old daughter is now at college to become a Dental Hygeinist!!!!!!

Good luck.

I was one of those kids who always had problems with teeth - no matter how much I cared for them - and I did - they always had cavities. What was so frustrating is that my younger brother never looked after his teeth - had to be forced to brush - and never had a cavity. I hated going to the dentist because it did hurt. Dentists have come a long way since we were children, though, and quite honestly, dental procedures today are more of a discomfort from having to keep your mouth open rather than from any pain of the procedure. What will probably bother her most of the whole procedure isn't going to be the work on her teeth but waiting for the freezing to come out. They can use a topical anaesthetic on the gum before the injected anaesthetic goes in and she probably won't even feel it. Just let her know there will be some noise but it won't hurt and then her mouth will feel funny for a few hours afterwards. If you are matter of fact about it, she will be too. Try not to let your own fears transfer to your daughter as she will pick up on it. Her experiences will be very different than yours were and probably not nearly as traumatic as you fear. Try not to let your fear become hers and she will be fine.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Lizzy, maybe you missed this but I'll post here again. Jinky is a dentist and I read to her your post over the phone. This was her reply...

Anatomically, molars have prominent grooves. Where the grooves meet, there's a pit. Normally, any small food particle would get inside that pit even if we brush properly. The bristles of the toothbrush won't reach that pit, so there is a tendency for it to create a cavity.

Advice - you need to take her to a dentist for a tooth filling, otherwise it will progress into an expensive one and it will cause her even greater pain. And that tooth will normally fall out 9 to 12 years old.

When you bring her to the dentist, inquire about pits and fissures sealants because they are the best form of prevention. star_smile.gif

Thanks you guys, really thank you, i feel much better about it all now.

I think its cause i feel so alone here in PA and any fear is made a massive thing.

I cant go in with her, they dont allow it, so ill be waiting for her with a big smile and be more positive, sometimes i just need a kick up the bum!

Thanks.

I can not belive you are doing this to your daughter........ no not about taking her to the dentist.... about instilling your feers on a child... Going to the dentist should be a normal part of growing up... all my children had their teeth check on a yearly basis from the age of 1 year old.... yes dental work can be uncomfortable but you showing all this fear is only being passed on to your child.... not a very good thing to do...

Show her support and guide her to have her teath checked but please dont continue to make her fearful of something that she has no reason to fear...

Good point. We shouldn't shelter our kids from necessary pain and discomfort. From my experience as a parent, children can handle more than we give them credit for as long as they know they're gonna be okay. :star:

Im not doing anything to my daughter, she never saw me cry or get upset about this, I took her to the dentist and we had a really constructive time, she was laughing all the way through and i continued to praise her and bought her books about it etc, she loved it and can not wait to go again!

Now if i did not give a ######, there would be reason for you to say this...... *sigh*

anyways, thanks for all your constructive advice!

Corey got his first filling a few months ago, Lizzy, and he was nervous about it.I told him not to be, but kids are gonna be..you know? Anyway, he came out all smiles and 13-year-old "cool" and said "that was nuthinnnnnn, Mom' all like...AS IF it would hurt. I knew he was scared, but was relieved that it didn't hurt at all. She'll be fine, and if she needs another she'll know what to expect. For Corey, like in lots of things, it was just a fear of the unknown... the way you've described, she's not really scared, so it probably won't be bad at all for her...good luck! :) M.
