Require daily cleaning? Isn't that just normal hygiene. Everyone that I know showers daily.

The study is exaggerated and flawed and I am not going to base my decisions on that. Bottom line is guys have to stop sticking it in every damn place especially in all the high traffic ones. If I was still a teen there is no way I would have sex without a condom these days.

I do agree with the recommendation that boys and girls get vaccinated with gardasil before they start getting sexually active. My youngest will definitely have that.

good! it's an important vaccine, and I think its development will have a big impact on public health. more insurance companies are on board with covering the vaccine for boys now, and hopefully vaccination rates will rise. there's still a lot of misguided and ridiculous misinformation and moralizing occurring regarding this vaccine still, and it's unfortunate.

Oh yeah. Gardasil, the Thalidomide of future generations...

#######. Where did you get that connection from? I think you need to worry more about the processed foods items that you or your kids might be shoving into your mouths these days.

Vaccine denier/conspiracy theorists are just bloody contemptible.

Yup, that's it. NO WAY a drug company would come up with a vaccine or drug that is unsafe for us. Not in this day and age! You remind me of the nurse who tried to force me to immunize my son with a live polio vaccine. I refused, and she said he would never go to school without it. Imagine her attitude when I was back a year later, and said vaccine was no longer authorized to be given due to it causing polio. Damnd ignorant, non-supportive parents!!

Thus far only 106 deaths, which is kind of low, considering the number of vaccines given to date. And only 1,760 had serious side effects, while 20,240 had non-serious effects. That's out of 57 million doses given. Now divide that by three (doses per person), and you have 19 million people having had the vaccine. Not bad numbers. But higher than I want to administer a vaccine to my kids that could have little to no benefit to them. I prefer to teach my kids the joys of abstinence until you truly know someone.

From the CDC: "In most cases HPV goes away by itself before it causes any health problems, and most people who become infected with HPV do not even know they have it." So why would anyone subject themselves to a drug with known side effects, including death, to prevent against something you may never catch, and even if you do, never know you have it??

there is a small amount of benefit in decreased urinary tract infections, which while rare, is nevertheless a big deal in infancy. It can often lead to hospitalization for IV antibiotics, and often triggers a whole cascade of further testing of kidney function, etc which is more often than not completely unnecessary, but is nevertheless still the standard of care.

The risk of UTI is already so small in males that I don't see the justification of the procedure as a preventative. Uti's are not common in males at any stage of life. If you polled a random group of 100 men, chances are good that none of them has ever had a UTI.

Thats the problem of using a relative risk based statistical model on something that has a low incidence to begin with. I don't see the point of a prophylactic procedure to reduce relative risk from 0.1% down to 0.05%. Basically that would mean it takes 2000 circumcisions to prevent one UTI. Most studies show a higher rate of infection from the procedure itself.

I know. I'm not in any way promoting the procedure routinely, for this or any other reason.

UTI rates are about 1% in boys, from birth to age 5. When they do occur, 86% are in uncircumcised males. It's a factor in diagnosing sick baby boys. Yes, there's a relationship, no, it still doesn't mean every boy should be circumcised. Two different things.

In general I support requirements for vaccines as the overwhelming public good outweighs someones right to make stupid decisions... But in this case (the HPV vaccine) there is no herd immunity and for the most part you are only hurting yourself (or someone stupid enough to sleep with you) I don't think it should be required for attending school and they have dropped the requirement for new immigrants to receive this vaccine - though I think the cost (300-500 dollars) was a major factor in that decision.

I did a little reading on the vaccine.. Very interesting story... A German researcher had to fight established dogma for 10 years to prove the link between a virus and cancer and won the Nobel prize.. A Chinese scientist and Australian scientist then worked together and invented a new type of vaccine based on those findings (another 10 years). The Chinese researcher is credited with doing most of the breakthrough work but sadly he died before seeing the vaccine come into use and has now saved hundreds of thousands of womens lives..

An interesting quote from the Chinese researchers wiki bio biography: (Ian Frazer is the Australian Researcher)

Ian Frazer has, to his enduring merit, forthrightly, adamantly and consistently credited his deceased friend and colleague Jian Zhou with alone devising the in vitro method and technology which, finally, after some decade of discouraging and demoralizing failures, succeeded at using recombinant DNA technology to fabricate the VLP of the pair’s invention and which was, first, successfully executed by Jian Zhou’s wife and fellow researcher Xiao – Yi Sun

HPV vaccine most assuredly has the ability though to provide herd immunity for the cancer causing strains of HPV it works on. Nothing in the vaccine prevents it from doing so, it's strictly human behavior, like nonsensical fear mongering about the vaccine leading to vaccination rates too low to accomplish herd immunity. Hopefully this can be turned around.

Also not helpful is ignorance about HPV itself. It is astonishingly prevalent and contagious. It can be carried under fingernails. "Stupid enough to sleep with somebody" is dismissive of the fact that a whole helluva lot of people are infected, and have nary a clue, and it can be passed from one person to another even when engaging in barrier protective sex. The best "safe sex" practices that have been touted for the last few decades for reducing transmission of chlamydia or HIV can totally fall short when it comes to HPV, so dumb-shaming or #######-shaming, which is never cool anyways, really, really isn't here.
