Hi all. I am a US citizen, and my husband is a permanent resident. We would like to try to have his father, a Malawian citizen, visit for a couple of weeks next summer. When writing an invitation letter, would it be better for me - the US citizen - to write it? Or my husband? Or does it even make a difference?

In the letter we will state that we will be paying for his airfare/accomodation, etc. We also intend on sending an affadavit of support as well as our financial documents. However, he only makes the equivalent of about $85.00/month. Does he even stand a chance of getting approved if he only makes that amount, despite the documents we'll be sending?

K-1 Visa
05/17/2010 – Petition mailed to USCIS via certified return receipt.
05/27/2010 – NOA1 issued
06/03/2010 – Touch/NOA1 hard copy received in US Mail
10/27/2010 – 5 month mark
10/28/2010 – Spoke to USCIS representative – 'still pending'
11/04/2010 – Spoke to USCIS representative – 'still pending', but service request generated
11/05/2010 – Notified that background checks are not complete - looks like we're in for a looong wait...
12/07/2010 – Received email notification of NOA2
12/16/2010 – NVC sent the case to Embassy in Malawi

03/14/2011 – VISA APPROVED!
05/04/2011 – Fiance and I came back to the U.S. together! smile.png

07/07/2011 – Check cashed and NOA1 issued.
07/22/2011 – Received biometrics letter.

08/31/2011 – EAD card arrived in the mail.
09/12/2011 – AOS interview - APPROVED! GC production ordered
09/21/2011 – Green Card received!!!

06/13/2013 - I-751 packet mailed to USCIS via certified return receipt.

06/17/2013 - NOA issued

06/19/2013 - Check cashed

06/21/2013 - Received NOA in mail.

You don't need to provide anything. Your father in law will be approved (or denied) based on HIS ties to his home country. He must provide proof that he's returning to Malawi by showing that he has a family in Malawi, a job, properties under his name and bank savings.

He can definitely show strong ties to his country, but he can not show evidence that he would be able to pay for such a trip. In that case, would we still not provide a letter or affadavit of support? Would he just be automatically denied because he doesn't make enough money?

an invitation letter means nothing. He must apply and be approved on his own merits. He must show strong ties to his country to prove he will return. Owning property, a job things of this nature. There is no such thing as an affidavit of support for a tourist visa

I agree with Mimolicious. There's no such thing as affidavit of support for tourist visa applications. If you're chasing an immigrant visa, yes the embassy will be more than happy to look at your financial standing but for a B2 visa, no.

I wouldn't say his chances are zero. My mother-in-law has almost zero income, but she has a lot of family members left in Mexico. I provided her with a packet of information (with very simple summary pages for easy viewing) and she was approved for a 10 year multi-entry visa. The CO did care about my finances, because I sent information stating that I would be paying for her trip and provide for her while she was here.

She has been here 3 months and is heading back to Mexico in about a week and a half.

Each country is different, and each CO is different, but give it a go, and while there is no official affidavit of support, having some statement showing how the trip will be paid for probably won't hurt if he doesn't have enough money on his own.

May as well give it a go, and good luck!
