congrats to the family member. sebelious should hire you.

just curious. how big was the subsidy? will they be able to use it properly to offset the cost of their plan monthly? I ask the second question, because I think it would be hard for me to not dip in the well.

Whatever you're taking, please pass it to some of the other folks here, they need it.

The subsidy is about 500 a month. Your subsidy, were you to apply, would depend on your household income, household size and the premium cost of the second lowest silver plan available in Oklahoma. I found valuepenguin.com to be an excellent site for estimating subsidy amounts and previewing available plans - much better than healthcare.gov.

I elected to apply the entire subsidy amount to the premium. After accounting for that, the lowest cost plan was in the 100-150 range (bronze). The most expensive was in the 800-850 range (platinum). I enrolled my family member in a plan that costs about 300 (silver). Primary care physician visits come with a 30 dollar copay (except preventive which are free) and are not subject to deductible. If blood is drawn during a doctors visit, there is no extra charge. Everything else is subject to an annual deductible of $1500.

Problem with the plan? There are two deductibles, one for two tiers. My family member needs to stay in one of the two tiers to minimize out of pocket dollars and that is something I will be helping out with.

When are you going to say something that isn't dreck? I mean you're actually saying higher education is a plague on our society. Watch this:

"Being conservative makes you a complete idiot."

In order to make that statement I didn't have to do any research, read anything, or talk to anyone. I just have to say it. Its really really really easy and the folks that know how easy it is for me to say something like that will consider my opinion accordingly.

Glad someone was able to give me a real experience story... I am helping out my friend (works as a cashier at a big-box retailer) and they keep, her at 29 hours so she is not eligible for their healthcare (she works a second part time job to make ends meet) but she needs to shop the marketplace and get some coverage... Hoping she can finally get affordable coverage as she is 45 and needs to get some preventative care check up...

And yet you've failed to respond logically to anything the "sheep" have to say. And yet they're the ones who are fun to watch?

we can rah rah for the left or right all we want. when we're done, we're all sitting at the same table.

admission: I haven't looked into it at all. I had no clue how the subsidy worked. I assumed they mailed you a big check & it was up to you to use it properly. good for you, looking out for the family.

You can do that too. You get to pick how you use your subsidy dollars. Let's say your subsidy is $200 a month and the plan you want is $500 a month. You can either pay $300 and let the Feds pay the insurer $200 or you can pay $500 and the Feds will give you $200 when you file your taxes. Or you can pick a number in the middle. I elected to put the entire subsidy towards the premium because why not?

Worst case, my family member makes more money in 2014 than expected and the subsidy amount she actually qualified for goes down. She ends up having to pay the Feds the balance at tax time.
