USC brings Fiance and son

My friend is a USC and his fiance just came last week with their 2 yr old son.

They went to SSA and only the fiance was given a SSN that will be mailed but they were still asking for a DHS form for the son.

How can the son get a SSN?

Does he only need to apply for US passport since the father is a USC?

Only the K-1 qualifies for the SSN at this time. The K-2 can not obtain a SSN until they have their GC.

Confused, was the son born in the USA, if not how did the son get to the USA without his passport?

U.S. citizens only need to show proof of being a U.S. citizen

If the child was born to a USC parent, then he/she is a USC and qualifies for a US Passport. Once that is obtained, then the SSN is easy.

It could be that the child was a USC but still entered the US as a K-2. Even if that is the case, then the US Passport is the next step then the SSN; there is no GC.

If the K-2 is not a USC, then the beneficiary files for the K-2 during AOS along with the parent and then the GC is usually about 5 months out.

they went to the SSA office and tried to get a SSN only the mom with k1 visa was given ssn that will be mailed but they were looking for a DHS form for the son for them to be able to apply for his SSN.
