6. Vermont
> Debt per capita: $5,566 (10th highest)
> Budget deficit: 14.2% (17th largest)
> Unemployment: 5.0% (4th lowest)
> Median household income: $52,977 (20th highest)
> Pct. below poverty line: 11.8% (10th lowest)

Vermont residents generally have a high quality of life, with very low crime and poverty rates last year. Despite a fairly high level of debt distributed across a small population as of fiscal 2011, the state’s credit rating is relatively strong. Vermont also had among the highest proportion of adults with a high school diploma in the nation last year. This may be due in part to the amount the state invests in education — Vermont spent $3,708 per capita on education in fiscal 2011, the most in the country. Education spending accounted for 40% of the state’s total expenditure that year, among the highest nationally. In 2011, the state passed Green Mountain Care, the first single-payer health care system in the U.S. The state plans to make the transition to the new system in 2017. Vermont already had the second-highest proportion of state residents covered by health insurance in 2012.

Well, it ain't Wyoming but it is the best BLUE state of them all. we are very conservative in our liberalism. Where did YOUR state place? There is a 90% chance it is worse than mine.

Reason? Guns.

We can all carry guns (so can Wyoming residents. Wyoming is ranked number 1). Because of this we have low crime. Because we have low crime we do not spend money on "fighting crime" and can spend money on education, healthcare Because of this we can walk our streets at night any time, any where. Because of this our quality of life is not stolen by criminals who force us to avoid bits and pieces of our fine state. Because of this there is a thriving downtown night life where people WANT to go because it is fun and entertaining. No one can visit and not say "WOW" what a great place to be! Because of this there are no "drive bys" no "knockout games" no "carjackings" no fear of a young black man walking home with skittles, no mall shootings, no school shootings, no police killed by criminals, (ever) . True, we have to dodge UVM students on skateboards, environmentalists riding bikes with flashing LED helmets...NO they are not outer space aliens, I checked. We tolerate hippies (yes, they all moved here) gays, lesbians and people that marry goats. Who cares? Life is good.

It will be fine with me when ALL of our state's spending is for education and healthcare.

Green Mountain care was passed in 2006. In 2011 they phased in the single payer for everyone plan which is also being accomplished. By 2017 ALL Vermont residents will be covered by this (we don't try to rush into things and fall on our face, like Obamacare) Many individuals and employers already opt for this.

Vermont rents some of its prison space to other states. We can't seem to fill them up, but other states can and PAY us for that.

Our liberal Democrat Govenor killed a nice buck on opening day of deer season last week. What was YOUR governor doing? http://www.seattlepi.com/news/us/article/Vt-gov-bags-6-point-buck-on-opening-day-4987362.php (caution, photo of Democrat with dead animal)

Shumlin is a real hunter, not a photo op hunter like Ho Chi Kerry ("Can I get me a huntin' license here?") Shumlin is a strong supporter of gun rights and education...his state's crime rate reflects this.

More evidence of your bizarre view on why there is a low crime rate in Vermont? You are so desperate to share your opinion, no matter how odd it makes you look, Are you paid by the NRA or one of the arms manufacturers? If not, it rather makes you sound obsessive.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

and? It probably is, there's a lot wrong with American politics but so what? Somehow in your head you are responsible personally for how well run Vermont is because you carry guns? I am fascinated, explain how that works exactly?

We already know that unrestrcted concealed carry is the reason for low crime in Vermont. You missed the point.

The point is that low crime has many social benefits in addition to low crime. So even people that do not own a gun, and plan to call a stranger to bring a gun if their family is threatened, can enjoy such things as good education, good healthcare and a high standard of living

No we don't. You believe it, but it certainly doesn't follow that that is a well researched and settled point of view, far from it, there is nothing to support your theory. It's just your personal opinion which is not worth the paper it's not printed on.

As for low crime rates having many benefits, who knew? I lived for many years in a country that had very, very low gun crime and very, very few gun accidents and low suicide rates but none of that can be attributed to concealed carry laws or fear of being shot if you are not polite to the person giving you a lift in a car. Strange that isn't it?

I already did.

Being allowed to carry guns reduces crime. (whether a perosn actually does or not is not important) Reduced crime allows resources ($$$) to be used for education and health care instead of fighting crime. Low crime allows people to enjoy life more fully and make use of their better education and health.

OUR state's budget is spent on things that make people's lives better because it does not need to spent fighting crime.

I am not the one that ranks the states and specifies the reasons. Low crime and good healthcare and education are not what I decided on as important, read the article.

UK's crime rate is double Vermont's. The homicide and suicide rates are higher. The place is Sodom and Gomorah compared to Vermont. Canada is even worse!

You never offer any other reason, only that it is not guns and then give an example of a country with a crime rate double what we have here. Pretty crazy if you ask me. And being polite is always good practice, why wouldn't you want to be anyway?

If it is not guns...what is it?

You want to believe that carrying concealed guns is the answer to everything. You want to believe what you want to believe, if you didn't no one would need to point out the obvious ridiculousness of this point of view.

Oh goodness !

Then perhaps it's best, if folk from UK and Canada are banned from

--visiting the USA or

--immigrating to the USA or

--marrying a USCitizen or

--working in the USA or

--studying in the USA on any type of student visa.

Keep all that crime outside of the USA, please.

and thank you.

WOO HOO Michigan is 35..... wait DARN that is not good. oops8rh.gif

If we give Detroit to Canada for free we will move 15 states up. Detroit is a mess and the big problem what made Detroit a mess was a few corrupted mayors and it started with Coleman Young who drove White out of the city

and ended with Kwame Kilpatrick who was a rising star in the democratic party. Corruption is part of the culture in Detroit and it did not help that the average joes in Detroit have no idea of any names on the city councel. It also did not help a lot of well paid Jobs disappeared and the citizens of Detroit that had Money escaped Detroit.

(Jimmy Carter called Coleman Young the best mayors our country have known!!!! CRAZY!!!!) My dog would be a better mayor.

Oh well, at least the west side of the state have the nice sandy beaches. dancin5hr.gifdancin5hr.gifdancin5hr.gifdancin5hr.gif
