I've been using my Jailbroken GMS iPhone 3GS with Straight Talk (Unlimited everything for $45/m) for about 2 years.

for a cheap unlimited prepaid plan, I have no complain with that (using AT&T 3G network. basically same service as NET10)

I second this. I use Straight Talk. Depending on the unlocked/jailbroken phone's original service provider, depends on your service. I recommend going with a Verizon or AT&T phone. You can look up how to jailbreak/unlock it yourself, or pay someone to do it.

I have an unlocked Samsung Galaxy (T-Mobile), and I pay $50/month for unlimited text/talk/data. My previous phone was an unlocked Samsung with Verizon.

I have some spotty service in the really remote areas (as I likely would with any service) but decent service elsewhere. If you pay for more months at one time, you get it cheaper. I like it because it's no contact, and get what you can afford.

Find out how the service is for the major big leagues in your area and pick one that has the most reliable in the areas you'll be travelling the most. None have "better" service than others, just more coverage in different areas all over the US.

NOTE ON STRAIGHT TALK:

If you have a smart phone or iPhone you have to get a Data Plan. If you get a cheapo flip phone from them (like $20 bucks) the plan is even less expensive. Get what you need, and pay for only that!

I agree with Republic Wireless. I bought my wife a Moto G phone from them for $150, and pay $29 TOTAL per month, and its seamless. It goes to wifi when it can for calls and data, and 3G and normal voice when it can't find wifi. And it just works. Now, we haven't traveled too much outside of Michigan other than a visit to El Paso, but in those locations, it worked great. And unlimited everything, plus a phone I like more than my iphone 5s, I'm pretty jealous of the plan I got her.
