Drivers License

I went to the local DMV today to get my drivers license and was told that if I were to apply today, my drivers license would expire at the end of January 2007 because that's when my I-94 expires. She told me that when I apply for my green card, I'll get a paper that I need to bring in to the DMV office so that they can issue me a drivers license for a year. She also told me that I can drive with my Canadian drivers license for 6 months (from time of entry into the US). Is this all true? Are there any fellow Floridians who have gone through this?? I almost feel like after January, it's like I'll be here illegally (even though I know I'm not). Any help or personal experiences would be appreciated. :help:

I waited until after I applied for AOS and took my NOA with me. My Florida licence is good until 2008 exactly 2 years from the date that I got it. The lady at the DMV explained that when it's time to renew just to bring my 10 year card or the NOA to remove the conditions depending on which I would have at the time.

Hope this helps.

This is pretty much the same in every state. Your driver's license is only valid till your visa - e.g. K1 or green card. They also make it almost impossible to get the driver's license without multiple IDs etc. Most people - drive on their 'other' license for 6 + months and hope to get their greencard in the meantime. It makes it hard for people with children and people that are working and people with jst one car. Unless you get into a big problem driving, most cops don't understand all the legalities and don't push you much on this angle - they will issue a ticket and send you on your way. Good Luck

Hello,

I entered the US on a K3 visa in April 2006. I went to the Melbourne DMV in Florida in May 2006. I showed up with my passport, K3 visa, Ontario drivers license and birth certificate. They took my Canadian (Ontario) license and gave me a Florida license which expires April 2008 (same date as when my K3 visa expires). They told me once I get my NOA for AOS I can bring it in and they will extend my license to the standard issue. Not really sure how long that is but probably 2-5 years.

They didn’t say anything about only being able to drive for 6 months. You can only stay in the US for 6 months though so maybe that’s where they were going with that. They did take away my Ontario license tough. Said it was illegal to have 2 licenses.

Hope that helps

In North Carolina it is illegal to drive after 60 days with a out of state licence or international license. Whatever....even the cop that pulled me over told me to hurry up and get that state license. Make sure you check I think all u need is a SSN and proof of insurance, good luck you also have to write the test -yuck.

I am also in Florida...and they will check your i94 or any other proof of your legal status.

In my opinion you should just stay with your Canadian DL, when you apply your AOS, just take the NOA and get your Florida DL :)

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Do you think I could drive my DH's car with my canadian DL? We're travelling from Florida to Ohio for the holidays and he was hoping I would be able to help him out for a few hours.

I don't know about Ohio Laws...but if you decide to drive, also take the passport with you at all time...anyways, you can always make the hubby do all the driving :)
