Arrived through K-1...now what?

Hello,

I arrived through K1 2 weeks ago. We got married on friday. What do i apply for first? SSN card then AOS, EAD? or does it really matter which is which? I noticed they ask for SSN card in AOS. Also anyone know what documents we can show to get a driver license? Thanks everyone!

Drivers license it depends on the state - they all have different rules for what you need to get one check your state DMV website for info.

It recommends not filing too soon to allow time for you to get into the system - I think said give it a couple of weeks after entry.

Id apply for SSN first then AOS but Im not at that stage yet so hopefully other VJers can assist with their experiences.

Going by your screen name, I'm guessing that you are a woman. If you are changing your surname due to your marriage then you can't apply for an SSN until you have your EAD. So, you need to apply first for AOS and EAD (and AP if you are going to need it) and then, once your EAD card has been received, you can apply for the SSN.

Regarding the driver's license, I think all states have tightened up a lot since 9/11. I know that, in Florida where I live, my wife couldn't get her DL until she had the EAD.

Fill out your signatures, timelines etc. so we can help you better. You can try for the SSN in your new name and see if you get it or not (some people are able to others are not, SS offices do different things in different states and citieds!) Same goes for State ids and drivers license. If you are not able to get it then better aply for your AOS and EAD ASAP. Good Luck
