Hi Everyone,

I received my packet 3 email for my fiance K1 visa at the end of October and am currently going through the not so fun process of getting my Victoria Police check. After having them incorrectly send my application back to me due to after an error made on their end, I have been waiting for it since Fri 8th November 2013.

However, there does seem to be some confusion about whether or not to get a name check only or fingerprint check. (I got a name check only. I have written two emails to the U.S. Consulate General, Sydney and received the following reply assuring me that a police name check only is fine. I have attached both emails.

As there seems to be some confusion however, I would LOVE to hear from anyone who has submitted a police name check only as part of their packet 3 and received the a-ok and got the visa appointment set and packet 4.

Thanks heaps and good luck to everyone out there, it feels AMAZING to know other people are out there going through the same thing as me and my American fiance!

Thank you for your recent inquiry.

Note: you only need to apply for 1 Australian police certificate.

Your certificate can be based on a name check or fingerprint check.

If it’s based on a name check, it must contain all aliases previously and presently used. Failure to provide a name check certificate with all aliases may result in the consular officer refusing your application for a police certificate based on a fingerprint check.

Thank you

Subject: RE: K-1 Fiancé Visa

I have been informed in the email below that in regards to the Australian police certificate "Your certificate can be based on a name check or fingerprint check."

However on the US Embassy Canberra website http://canberra.usembassy.gov/iv_faqs.html#police it states:

"What sort of police check do I need? Do I have to apply in each state?

The Australian police check must be done on the basis of a fingerprint check."

Which do I need, a fingerprint check or a name check?

Kind Regards,

Emma

Hi there

When I had my interview in Sydney in October the 'first window' Consulate lady (who was a VERY serious employee) specifically checked my police certificated had the fingerprints done.

There are quite a few topics that indicate that fingerprints checks are expected but I totally get why you would be questioning it, as the responses you got from the peeps in the know aren't really clear...

I am glad I got them done in any case because it will be good for employment purposes when the time comes also. Apart from the cost, no down side really....unless you robbed a bank in which case...not so good....ha ha

Take care
