Hi everyone, longtime lurker, first time poster. My wife and I successfully completed the adjustment of status process back in August. She originally came to the United Status as an au pair on a J-1 Visa and was given a SSN when she arrived. We assumed that her SSN was still good, but when she had referenced it for background checks or getting utility services in her name we have been told that her SSN isn't in the system or the SSN isn't linked to her name. I know she doesn't need a new SSN, but are we supposed to inform the SSA that she now has a green card and is a permanent resident or could there be some other error going on?

Thanks for your help.

Two options of what is going on: 1) her SSN has been "canceled" as a valid number due to her J-1 visa expiring or 2) the SSN is one of those that requires the new software to look up otherwise it comes back as invalid. I would go to the SSA office and update her immigration status to LPR and see if that helps. If not, then ask the employer or person doing the checks if they are using the latest software for looking up SSNs.
