Hi all,

We are expecting baby soon. We really liked 2-3 names which have Islamic/Arabic origin.
We would like to know if anyone ever faced any issues from USCIS/immigration just because of first name being Islamic origin, for e.g. Zoya/Shahreen etc?
Please suggest and share any related experiences.

NOTE: We appreciate all religions with equality and respect all. Above question is totally related to some of experiences with our Muslim friends who faced hard time from immigration only because of their names. None of the above should be taken against anyone.

Thanks & Regards,

Are you in the United States? Irregardless, you can name your baby whatever you like. If its a common Arabic/Muslim name, I have heard that it can do longer to perform background checks but if you are already in the USA then I don't think you have anything to worry about. Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong. Congratulations! We too are expecting in January and had a hard time deciding on a name. God Bless.

Salaam. My fiance does not have an Islamic name as he is a convert but his son, who was born Muslim, does of course. We had no issues; I mean, he is only 10! :) You should name your baby what you choose and NEVER be apologetic. Being proud of your heritage, culture, and religion does not denigrate that of others. :) Insha'Allah things go smoothly for you and mabrook on the impending birth!

I like the name Zoya and it's not purely islamic, i think, because it's fairly common in Russia as well. Not as much as Anna and Maria of course, but still.

I'm the beneficiary.

Want to know what's happening with your case? Here's the USCIS tracking page (get an account and see if the case's been 'touched'!). Don't get your hopes up though, some cases never even appear there despite being successfully processed.
