I have no plans.

And I don't eat meat.

Even if I paid a butcher to slaughter a lamb/goat, which I can't imagine doing, what on earth would I do with the meat???

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.

-Qur'an, Al-Infitar, Surah 82:1-5

The point is to give some (or all, if you wish) of the meat to the poor.

Not sure how one could slaughter-it-yourself and then donate the meat here in the U.S., given the health codes.... unless your have your own USDA-approved slaughterhouse.

You do not have to worry about USDA or municipal codes when you live in rural or unincorporated areas. Some here in houston will drive out of the city limits to use someone's property. It's not so difficult but you do have to know whom to ask.

Anyone have any idea how much it costs to buy one and have it slaughtered??

I didn't mean the slaughtering part. I meant you wouldn't be able to go donate that meat to a charitable organization, unless it was slaughtered in a commercial slaughterhouse and had that "seal of approval" from the government.

I guess you could personally know of some poor people, and go offer them the meat on your own. Maybe they'd accept it.

oops I knew that as soon as i posted. :) There are also some Qurbani websites that will take the donation and slaughter for you and distribute the meat here int he US or any country you select. For those like Melly who do not eat the meat. It's a ittle more expensive than having the butcher slaughter for you. Our butcher is slaughering an dtaking 2/3 of the meat for us to distrubte to familys here.

We hope to go back to Morocco together for Eid next year. I had no idea people did that in the USA, but it makes sense. I like the idea of picking it up from the butcher best!!! I hear it's quite a site to be in morocco or other places that celebrate Eid during this time. The smell of meat roasting on the grill...yummy. ok now Im hungry!

Oooo excellent tips MPB -- I am sure these could be very helpful to many people.

Melly I'm with you -- I don't eat cow or sheep (or pig or donkey or monkey or lizard or anything like that :P.) Haven't touched those since I was 19. I was vegetarian for a long time, however I have since succumbed to the lure of seafood and poultry. Mahmoud's not real big on eating beef or lamb, either -- only once in a while. I might cook him some lamb for the Eid, though, if he has a hankering for it.

I know organizations around here will not accept the meat; however, it is easy enough to find individuals - international college students are often struggling, less well off families at the mosque (and the mosque will sometimes arrange this on your behalf), or if you do any community level volunteer work, you often encounter needy families. You can give to them personally rather than on behalf of the organization.

We used Helping Hand last year and Islamic Relief also has a Qurbani program and is well regarded charity.

The lecture I posted at the top of the thread also talks about the first 10 days. It also gives advice on how to deal with people who say the sacrifice is cruel (his advice is kind of funny :) ).

Will anyone be fasting? Definitely a much easier time of year because of the shorter days.

Omar went to buy his sheep today. Stopped by one farm and the farmer said he had one sheep in the back...Omar goes out and this smart sheep comes up and makes friendly with him. He said to me, the sheep likes me. I can't take him home!! So he is still looking.
