Anyone using a UK PS3 in the US?

This is a very mundane question for this forum and it may not be in the right location (so moderators should feel free to move it as they see fit).

Our kids and I moved to the US a month ago. We are still waiting for our shipping arriving. It's obviously that time of year where kids start talking about what they would like for Christmas and PS3 games have come up. They know they cannot have US Wii or DS games operating on their UK systems but we were led to believe the PS3 was region free. Now I've done a bit more research online and I seem to be getting conflicting information as to whether games are region-free or whether a US disc could not work on a UK PS3 console.

My intention is to borrow a US PS3 game from the library to try on our console once the shipping arrives but the shipping may not now clear customs and be delivered to us in time so I need to base a decision on buying the kids PS3 games for Christmas prior to running that test.

Does anyone have direct, personal experience of running US games on a UK PS3?

Thanks in advance - especially from my four boys!

Best wishes

Laura

Yeah, we brought over our UK PS3 and we've been using it (we actually just bought a TV for the purpose of letting me play The Last of Us again. I'm spoilt). Only been playing the stuff I've brought with, though. I also need to borrow someone's local game copies.

I was under the impression that I would *not* be able to buy local region PS3 games and have them work on my UK PS3.

But, now I've googled a bit and it seems the games are region free, but the console is not: http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Games/Is-the-PS3-Region-Free/td-p/7913384

So, if your boys have been doing a lot of DLC or playing online, they will likely find that won't work anymore but game disks should just work (movies won't).

Oh, also. Any particular games they were after? I was thinking of getting a copy of the new Batman, so I can report back. ;)

Thanks, Lost At Sea

My kids are too young for downloads and online play. They are all disc based players. My googling seems to suggest that the game discs are region free but that the Bluray element of the console is still region specific. That then threw me as to whether the console was actually region free or not.

From the link you provided, it seems it will be OK for me to go ahead and buy them the games they want for Christmas so long as there is no DLC element to any of them - and I am going to leave my husband to figure that out!

Thanks for your reply

Best wishes

Which new Batman? None of them has asked for it but they are big fans of superheroes so that might crop up.

The specific games being asked for are Disney Infinity and Marvel Lego Superheroes. Either of those your cup of tea? :)

Cheers

I think they may be too little for the games I play - although the lego games are basically fun for everyone! I didn't know there was a new one of those. :)

THANK YOU!

My kids will be so happy. Bless your cotton socks for helping me out with this, Lost At Sea! I was struggling with all the technical jargon on my own.

The research is just as much for my benefit as your boys'. :) Means I now know I don't have to get a new PS3!

Shame that PS4s aren't backwards compatible. But Amy wants a PS3 so she can play the Kingdom Hearts Remixes.. which I thoroughly agree with..

I have a somewhat relevant question that I am curious about. Bringing over a foreign device obviously comes with its own region of Power Cord and the plug on the end of it. I've used adaptors before on things like a cell phone charger and things for charging small devices, but never for something as power intensive as say a games console, which would remain permanently plugged in.

Has anyone been using a UK -> US adaptor on things like their playstation/xbox or a PC and the like? Would it be better off buying a proper US power cord for use with my UK xbox?

I've been wondering the same thing. I've been wondering whether it will be OK if I buy a US power cord for my laptop, a US mains plug for my ipad/ipod, a US mains plug for my phone etc...can't figure out if that will work or if I'll have to use an adapter for everything.

For things like straighteners, hair dryer etc I've just bought US ones over there and leave them at my fiancé's place to use every time I visit. Those type of appliances don't heat up enough with an adapter and I've been told hair dryers can break/blow up etc if used with an adapter plug.
