Everyone,

I had a question regarding translation of foreign documents. I have 2 birth certificates to translate from Spanish to English for the I-485. I already translated one of the birth certificates, when I read that the "translator needs a certificate to show that he or she is competent to translate the foreign document into English." I am not fluent in Spanish, but I knew enough to translate the birth certificate into English. Can I show my college transcripts of taking 5 classes in Spanish, with all "A" to show as a certificate? Or is the USCIS really particular with translations and the necessary certificates? craig

USCIS accept translations done by a friend who is fluent in foreign language as written, they need not be a pro.

"All documents that are in a language other than English must be submitted with a translation. The person translating the document must certify that the translation is complete and accurate and that he/she is competent to translate from the foreign language into English."

Just needs a disclaimer at the bottom of the translation:

I_______ typed name , certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and [Foreign Language]

and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled __________ .

Phone Number _______________

It is recommended to have a third party do the translations, a friend will be fine.

For my birth certificate I got a certified (expensive) translatio but this would be a simple translation for an employment letter, I guess I'll get one of my in-laws to do it.
