Work visa expired, but valid social security, what can it be use it for?

Hi,

I have a friend that entered the united states with a valid work visa. However, his visa now expired but he does hold a valid social security that was given to him when he was here legally. This is my question.

Can he open a bank account with the social security?

Can he use the social security to apply for a credit card?

Please help. Your support is always appreciated.

Bio. Appt Corrected. : 14-Sep-14 (Bio appt canceled by immigration since application already included fingerprint card).
Interview Appointment Received via E-Mail : 25-Nov-14
Interview Date, Place, and Status: 09-Dec-14 in Fairfax, VA (Accepted)
Same Day Oath Ceremony: 09-Dec-14
US Passport Received: 11-Dec-14
Comments : Applied pursuant to INA 319(b) on the basis of marriage to a U.S. citizen who is or will be regularly stationed abroad. Application sent to the Virginia office. Fingerprints taken at overseas embassy and sealed on enveloped to be sent with N-400 application.

Valid as in its theirs? Sure they can do anything but work really. Be careful tell them do not check the box that says are you a citizen., But they can get credit card and all that.

If he is now out of status, I.e. the visa is no longer valid, then he should go home firstly as the ramifications for an overstay are serious. As far as I know the SSN is valid for life he can use it to open a bank account and creidt card but no one will lend money to someone who is unemployed. Unless he is now working illegally. Why does the individual want to open a bank account now anyway

Your friend would need to contact the bank/credit card company to see what is required in order to open an account. From my experience, it takes more than just a SSN to open an account.

He is currently working here even though his visa has expired, not officially obviously. He wants to help his family back home financially.

You said he has a SS#, but does he have an ID? Most banks require a photo ID to open an acct.

He was a Matricula Consular which apparently a good amount of major banks accept as identification. I'm wondering about the credit card application though.

Its not for me to judge but I would not recommend violating the terms of his visa, the consequences can be very severe.
