Selective Service registration

Hi everyone,

I am planning to send my naturalization application next year, but already started reviewing requirements and want to make sure that everything's ready before the window of application time opens up.

The requirement in question:

If you did not register with the Selective Service and you (1) are male, (2) are 26 years old or older, and (3) lived in the United
States in a status other than as a lawful nonimmigrant between the ages of 18 and 26, send:

A “Status Information Letter” from the Selective Service.

Here's the info:

- Came to the US at the age of 23 on an F1 full-time student visa (F1 is considered a non-immigrant visa)

- Got an H1 at the age of 27

- Got the GC at the age of 32

So, before turning 27 (or even 32), I basically wasn't required to register with the Selective Services.

According to the Selective Services website, check out the requirements:

- Who must register chart: http://www.sss.gov/PDFs/WhoMustRegisterChart.pdf

- Need a Status Information letter or not? https://www.sss.gov/Status.html

- Status Info (PDF) https://www.sss.gov/PDFs/PrinterFriendly/StatusInfo.pdf

No status information letters are required from the Selective Service System for:

- Non-U.S. male on a valid non-immigrant visa

F1 Student Visa - if you entered the United States as an F-1 Student, and remained in that status until your 26th birthday, you would need to provide documentation indicating that you were admitted on an F-1 visa and attended school full-time as required. (Acceptable documents for this situation include copies of your I-20 or a letter from the school you attended indicating your full time attendance as a non-immigrant alien).

Questions:

1 - Does it mean that I can ignore the Selective Service registration?

2 - Or do I have to request a "Status of Information" letter?

I have read a few posts regarding the Selective Service registration but none of them are similar to my situation.

My guess is that since I was here on a non-immigrant F1 visa, then I don't have to worry about registering with Selective Service, but it's best to get your expertise and opinions on this matter.

Many thanks

since you are above 31 now it does not matter if you signed up or not. So you do not have to worry about it

Thanks girimurthy. How did you find that information?

I read something about a 5 year rule but don't know much about it.

Can you please point me towards the right direction to get more info?

Thanks again

These are from various forums.

http://forums.immigration.com/showthread.php?562956-N-400-denail-notice in this forum infact one person was rejected since he did not signup for the Selective services and was told to apply after 31 by USCIS in the rejection letter.

That is one and also you did not get your PR till you were 32. So there is no way you could have signed up before even if you wanted too in a H1 visa.
