K-1 and SSN - DO you need to file for SSN before marriage?

Hello All,

Had a question regarding K-1 and SSN's. The guide on this website says that you should file for SSN before Marriage for a K-1 Visa, then go back to the SSN Office and change your name.

Can you file for the SSN after marriage using the K-1?

Also, if you have to file for the SSN before marriage, can you file, then get married say the next day or so, and then receive your card two weeks later, and then go to the SSN office when your card is received and change the name? Or do you have to wait to get your card then get married?

Yes, you can get an SSN after marriage up to 76 days after entry on a K1 regardless of when the marriage takes place.

From what i've heard after POE before Marriage is when you should apply for a SSN number.

You can apply before or after, change the name when you marry at any time you want, if you can convince them that you're allowed to do that, since in many cases they don't know their own rules. Print a copy of the rules given here our guide to getting an SSN and show it to the officer when applying if they don't let you, ask for a supervisor, do what you have to do to make them assign you a SSN. If it doesn't work, go to a different SSN office.
