How long does it take normally? I paid the fee on Oct 8 and POE-ed on Oct 22. I havent received Welcome to USA letter, SSN and green card in the mail. For SSN, I am going to local office next week. But for green card, can you please suggest me. In ELIS website, it is still "Accepted".

Thank you.

When you goto the SSN office. its best to download a new application and fill it out--so if they say your not in the system and please go fill out a new application, you can simply hand over the already filled out form..ensure you bring proper ID as well.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

takes 1-3 months after POE to get the green card. But your endorsed visa in your passport is a temporary green card for up to a year so you can use that for anything you may need.

Thank you, Niki. So, I will not worry for green card in the mail. I used the endosed visa to go Canada last week and everything went well. Thanks again.

When I went to the SSN office in NYC the guy I talked to said that SSN's applied for during the visa application come through less than 1% of the time. He had me fill out a form for a new card and I had it in the mail less than a week later, it was pretty incredible.

As others said your stamped Passport will act as your green card until you receive it. It took me about a month to get it in the mail.

Getting my SSN was a little more of a pain... in hindsight I wish I had gone to the local office and applied for it sooner. I was told something similar to Evan11 and had an experience similar to him.

Not having a SSN was really inconvenient for a few weeks.

I was told the same. I went on Nov 19 and that guy said I am going to get it in the mail in 2 weeks. He also gave me the receipt and it was written as the same. Hope to get it soon.

Hi

I was curious is there a number in your visa that serves as a temporary green card. The reason I am asking is I spoke to a Health care rep in my state about insurance. She said there is a box for legal permanent resident holders on the form but there needs to be a number. So with a number my wife can sign up for the health care plan. otherwise I need to find alternate plans for her healthcare insurance

thanks in advance

her A# (registration number) is on the visa. But I don't know if they need that.

She likely needs an SSN to sign up for benefits. I suggest going to the SSN office, applying for the number, then going back the next day to get the number. They still have to mail you the card but you normally have the number available the next day.
