I have been in the US about 2 years after moving from the UK and getting married. My original visa was a K-1.

My 2 year green card is set to expire next year right around the time i am planning a trip back to the UK to see my family. I am wondering if the US government send you any kind of documentation to let you know if my green card is about to expire, or if I have to complete the forms myself? I am assuming that they would notify me, but do not want to assume anything. Do you know what form it is I have to complete?

Does anybody know how this process works, what the cost would be and how long my visa would be renewed for? when can I start the paperwork to renew the card?

Also when can I apply for citizenship, I was told after 5 years but would like someone to confirm this if anybody knows.

Sorry, so many questions!!

Thanks!

Yes, you should be following the Removal of Conditions (RoC) process, to... well... remove the conditions on your residency and get a 10 year GC. smile.png This is non-optional and not just a renewal. You should do this within the 90 days before your card expires (you can't do it sooner, nor should you do it later).

Once you've submitted the paperwork, they'll send you an NOA1 which will act as a 1 year extension to your card (while the paperwork processes) that you should carry with you, along with your expired GC, when you travel abroad.

There's a whole forum section dedicated to the RoC process: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/86-removing-conditions-on-residency-general-discussion/

As above, follow the link to the guide and look at the steps.

Citizenship after 3 years if you've been married to, and living with, your USC spouse.

You got information with your greencard that said it was your responsibility to renew and they won't remind you. However they actually do send a notice to the same address the greencard went to. If you move, you won't get the notice. if you change your address with USCIS, the notice will still go to the original address. So take responsibility for remembering.

Does anybody know how this process works, what the cost would be and how long my visa would be renewed for?

You don't have a visa and a visa will not be renewed. You are a permanent resident. You have to "remove conditions" on your two year issued card to receive one that is good for 10 years. The form is I-751. $590. A lot of evidence of your marriage has to go with the application.

when can I start the paperwork to renew the card?

Look at the date on your card...resident since ________. Apply before that date, but no sooner than 90 days before.

Also when can I apply for citizenship, I was told after 5 years but would like someone to confirm this if anybody knows.

Look at the date on your card...resident since ________. Three years from that date you are eligible to be a citizen if you stay married to your K1 spouse. If you don't remain married, then fve years. Apply no sooner than 90 days before the date you are eligible (3 or 5 years) or as long after as you wish, or never. If you don't become a citizen, you renew your greencard every 10 years.
