My wife is within 14 days of her K-1 Visa and I-94 expiring. Is there any kind of extension that would allow her to apply for a social Security Number? And can that extension be applied for after she sends off her I-485?

Thanks

if she walks into a SSA office

and fills out the SS-5

and asks for a SAVE db lookup in the visa name

and the clerk FINDS her by visa name

she'll be granted a SSN.

That's it. But I think she's on the edge, with the I-94 expiring, so go Friday.

To answer your question, no.

To answer your question, no.

You were right but at least I could apply for an I-765 Employment Authorization which takes 3 approximately months to get, then take that back to SS Office and get her a number. All while the I-485 is being processed.

Absolutely, you also get AP as a combo deal.

I would also try what Darnell said.

My K1 visa had an expiry date of 26th June, I went to the social security place and applied for my SSN on 21st June. They made a copy of my marriage certificate (which I took just to prove I had fulfilled the conditions of the K1 visa) and I received the SSN in the mail about a week later. It was all very quick! If I were you I would go down there and try anyway.

Hilt ! ! ! What news ?

Hi Darnell,

Before I posted my 1st question, I had already had been to SS Office and filled out an SS-5 and brought along our marriage cert. That's when the little lady with the box of tissues on her desk explained to me that the computer won't let her process the App because " today's date and the visa expiration date are within 14 days of one another". So I called up a USCIS center and they told me about the work authorization angle. I did not go today i was too busy and wanted to get the I-485 etc. etc. etc.and the I-765 in the mail.

Tell me: What does "a SAVE db lookup in the visa name" mean? If it is a possibility I'll give it a try Monday.

Thanks

It's luck of the draw as to what any individual office will tell you, as evidenced above. The 14 day thing makes no sense, because you can apply today, and usually go back the next day and get a print out of your SSN. Getting the card in the mail is a non-issue, IMHO. Who needs it?

But it IS frustrating that the clerks apply what rules they want WHEN they want.

As for SAVE... http://www.uscis.gov/save/what-save/what-save

Basically a database of all immigrant entries into the US. If your name is visible to the SS folks, then they know you are a legal K1 immigrant, and are eligible for a SSN (not all visas allow one to get a SSN).
