She can not live here on a Visitor Visa, and for an extension you need a reason and the most you could expect would be one. Usually the chances of another Visa or entry after an extension is limited.

If she does not have a Visa the first thing would be to get one which amongst other things involves showing why she would want to visit and most importantly return.

Like I mentioned with my Mother the cost of Insurance for a few weeks was an arm and a leg, for months well proper cover just is not going to happen. I assume it is the same in Mexico, but one of the main coverage for Travel Insurance is getting you home if you get injured or sick. The last thing any Insurer wants to do is pay long term US expenses.

I have seen long term covers mentioned previously, seemed to be mainly with regards to Indians who wanted parents to come and long term visit with them. All the ones I saw were both restricted in what they would pay up and had pre existing exclusions, so nothing decent, a limit of say $50,000 would be gone in a few days in a US Hospital.

it is a horrible situation, no Country wants to take on aged parents of Residents, after all that is where most peoples life time health costs are incurred.

Adjustment of Status.

May I suggest you break this down into component part.

First she needs a B2 Visa

If she gets a visa she needs travel insurance

How much that costs, what is available will determine how long she can practically stay

As this topic comes up quite a bit and there is no obvious solution , please let us know what you find out and decide to do.

Thanks boiler. When I called the US State department, they told me to contact the US Embassy in Mexico and ask for a B2 visa for medical needs...indicating the rules for each country varies and the embassies have the authority to set the restrictions.

We are fortunate to live in a city with public free and sliding scale health, dental and vision clinics. Immigration status is not asked. This will work until we need a specialist or specialized treatment or major medical (hospitalization). Yes, it is a bad situation. That's why I'm here asking about options.

They don't ask status but if your mother uses them when she becomes an immigrant then they can come after you for repayment if the original treatment was funded by taxpayer money. The problem is they come after you at the rate billed to the government which is many times the regular sick person rate. Just because a bill isn't presented someone is paying for it.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

The Consulate will want details of the Medical Treatment together with evidence of the funds to pay for it.

When you get around to signing the affidavit of support it says your are responsible for repaying any federal means tested benefits the immigrant takes. Means tested mean anything where they have a benefit based on your income/wealth

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

You would need confirmation from the clinic that they will treat her for free, obviously you do hear of Hospitals doing it pro bono, but it is pretty unusual.

Seems to be more for heart rendering Children cases.
