President Kerry heads for Syria for "talks"

Neither is it a surprising that something relatively commonplace, like elected representatives visiting other nations and their leaders in the performance of their official duties has suddenly become "new and scandalous".

I doubt that you could name even one governor that has not met with foreign leaders. And governors don't set US policy either. That doesn't mean that they are or should be barred from meeting with leaders of other nations if it benefits those they represent. Same goes for Members of Congress. Not sure how many but I'm sure it was more than a handful of Republican Members of Congress that went and met with foreign leaders while Slick Wille was running things in the White House. It's simply business as fcuking usual even if the administration wants to portray it as something else. They've done that on more than one occasion as it is...

The "united front" is getting a little tired, considering the way that foreign policy towards the the middle east (specifically since 9/11) has been driven by bullies. Seems that they are asking for things that they have no right to ask for or to expect. I'm still not convinced by Kerry's motivations - but still - it is as you say, business as usual.

So this visit is hardly comparable to say, the Iran Contra affair - which the executive at the time were deeply embroiled in, undercutting their own established foreign policy by selling arms to Iran.

There's a reason the reaction against Bush is so pronounced - and it has a lot to do with his record and political approach over the last 6 years.

32% job approval rating last week, according to one poll. Similarly Mr Cheney said just a few days ago that Rumsfeld is the best Defence Secretary the country has ever had. I wonder how many people would agree with him on that assessment. Out of touch?

But as you said - this is about Kerry, not Bush.
