Frustrated and worried

Hey,

I've been dealing with this for a while now and it's finally come to a head. I don't know what to do. When I arrived here over 2 years ago I had absolutely nothing and my wife and I being a young couple with out much investment had even less. Something has been stopping me from getting my drivers license all this time. My wifes car. I'm 6'4" can't even fit in it, and by UK standard isn't even road legal. I went for a car loan about a year ago and was refused because my GC has an expiration date. Now i'm starting a new job in about 2 weeks and NEED to be driving. I can drive, I've been out and could use someone else car to pass the test that's not the issue. The refusal is. I just can't do this any more and I don't know what i'm supposed to. Debt is an issue, using credit cards for food in the beginning and such. We are paying that down, ever so slowly. I make decent money but not enough to just go out and buy a new car. Even a used car. I've struggled for 2 years in this country trying to function as an adult. With little to nothing to my name and now that I finally have some stability this still lingers. Between not being able to add another bill every month and being refused to consolidate.

Frustrated and worried.

Hello!

I'm a little confused as to why someone would deny you a car loan because of your GC. Where did you apply to get a car loan? A bank or a dealership? I know someone who is here in the US under an H1-B visa and this visa also has an expiration date but he had no issue getting a loan for a new car. So you might want to try a few different places. One place doesn't make the judgement on how the system works. How about getting a loan under your wife's name instead? Unless her current car is still on loan.

Ever considered maybe borrow a car from a family member first until you can find a place that will issue you a car loan?

Regardless of what you do, I wish you the best of luck.

ROC Journey:

4/24/13 - Submitted I-751 application

4/26/13 - I-751 officially filed

6/11/13 - Biometrics done

8/14/13 - Rec'd RFE

9/21/13 - Submitted RFE response

9/23/13 - RFE response rec'd at VSC

(about 2 months later)

11/21/13 - Service request via Tier 1 submitted

12/11/13 - Response to service request rec'd - vague info about processing times

12/12/13 - Service request via Tier 2 submitted

12/10/13 - APPROVED!!! (letter rec'd 12/14/13)

12/16/13 - 2nd Service request response rec'd

12/17/13 - Card production email/text rec'd (online case updated)!

12/24/13 - Notification rec'd via email regarding card mailed on 12/23/13 (online case updated as well)

12/26/13 - 10-yr card rec'd!

One thing I have learned on this journey:

There is no such thing as an "overkill" evidence package. Submit anything and everything you can. Who knows what will prevent you from getting an RFE.

Your GC doesn't have anything to do with a loan. But if you used credit cards for food years ago, and are still paying that off, you might have developed bad credit. Places are unlikely to trust you with new loans if your old ones are still ongoing.

You can try a different place, that is a good idea. I am unsure why you would take one no as the permanent answer for you. You didn't try another dealership? I would sell your wife's car and buy a bigger one instead of trying to get 2 cars. If it doesn't work, then you'll have to take the bus. Good luck.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

The fact that you have a conditional GC should not prevent you from getting a car loan. I am an international student and when I bought my car, I even got a car loan from a local credit union. Note that all I had was an SSN, a part-time on campus job that pays less than 5k a year.

I was an international student on F-1 visa
