Took a chance on 12/30, applied for SSN, in her married name - against all advice due to possible holdups at DHS for name mismatch.

Received SS card 1/6/14, "Not Valid For Employment without DHS Authorization". At least now we can apply for IL State ID card, open bank accounts in her name, etc. Still waiting for EAD so she can go to work. Meanwhile, she will go to ESL classes beginning next week.

VJ estimates EAD for Jan 16-18. But now the process is rolling along, things will begin to fall into place.

Good luck to all November 13 filers!

Tell Gema she is not alone! I am almost climbing the walls. Sometimes I think it would be easier in K1s didn't have to adjust like this. We are fine money wise but is a stress on my husband to be working very long hours to support us both. We laugh about it now, though. He comes home very tired and all I want to do is chat!

Hi there - My husband is going a bit stir crazy too but he's super handy and has done a ton of DIY so that's helped. Last week put a ton more flooring in our attic and tripled our storage space! :)

We were just saying though yesterday how we are very fortunate that money is not a big issue for us although obviously we've gone through a lot more savings than we'd like...but it really is a screwy way to do things...I think had we understood the whole process, we would have gotten married first before he came so he'd arrive with the green card. We could have tiimed it better for him being a teacher and looking for work at the right time too..oh well, live and learn I guess. :)

Just one word of advice to November filers - if anyone is in NJ, (and possibly other states), you may want to study up on the DMV written test. We could not seem to get a straight answer even after we got our EAD card and went to our local DMV for him to get a permit. He had to go to another DMV to take the test and 3 people gave us different info about whether he would need just the road, just the written or both tests.

He did end up needing the written test and since he didn't know or have a book, he did not study or anything and he did not pass. He did fine on all the common sense and driving stuff but the fines, etc he did not do well on...so he is re-taking it this weekend. Still don't have clarity on whether he will then need a road test - it's a bit screwy.

so my advice is, if you're bored, you may want to read up on the manual...the NJ one was 212 pages!!

Gema has never driven so its all new for her, she has been studying the TXDMV manual so she is ready later but its also very dull info and hard to stay interested. Part of her is just angry there are no taxi's where I live or better public transport lol.

We have Buses in El Paso but they have 1 hour gaps or more in their rotations so a simple trip across town can take 3 hours instead of 30 mins by car.

I miss Taxis and jeepneys too

I'm clearly the exception here as, while I'm adjusting from a Family-based application (through my USC wife), I was down here on a TN Visa for work so I just cant leave the country until the AP comes through (which is a bit moot as our interview date will likely be around the same time as AP approval). There are probably a few more like this (adjusting from H1 or L), but the folks who have to go through all of this from their home country, to then getting married in the US, and then finally putting in the application to start the timer must be losing their minds or are now fluent in another language!

I would have loved to take a 3 month "stay-cation" but sadly I dont think my wife would approve ;-)

Hi guys! Sounds like your husband is handy to have around! I would love to decorate but because we are in an apartment the walls have to stay off-white. When did you file for AOS?

Good advice for the driving exam - I've been doing some studying but not as much as I should...wink.png. Is he planning to look for jobs in schools? Does he need to take the state certification to teach? I have a degree in Early Childhood Ed (no teaching qualification though) and I've heard different things about whether or not I can work in schools here.

When everyone had their biometrics, did they take your appointment letter and stamp it? They did that to mine but then they gave it back to me and I still have it now - the reason I ask is because my online case status shows that my files haven't been touched since November 21st... Do USCIS need that to prove I had my biometrics taken? Kinda anxious my case wasn't touched despite having had my biometrics appointment.

Thanks for your input, also. I was beginning to worry. Bit off topic, but I've been to Hungary (Budapest) and I have to say it was definitely one of my favorite cities!
