Just being curious that on my interview I was asked to repeat the Oath of Allegiance after IO:

  1. Support the Constitution;
  2. Renounce and abjure absolutely and entirely all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which the applicant was before a subject or citizen;
  3. Support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic;
  4. Bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and
  5. A. Bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; or
    B. Perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; or
    C. Perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law.

Is this something that all of you went thru? IO knew that he’s not recommending me for the Oath Ceremony yet rewarded my file for “Supervisor Review” why would he still conduct such Oath…? Should I take that as an initial approval from his end? Sorry folks I’m trying to patch the clues to make my self little comfortable.

Should I take that incidence as an initial approval from his end? Is it a sound promising?

That is standard procedure for everyone. It is not an indication of anything.

Thanks gringasuramerican! Just saw online that they posted my USPS tracking number at US Dept. of State website - my email is registered but I did not receive anything from them.

I hope it's the Passport Book on its way (could also be Naturalization certificate, or passport card I also applied for - additional $30 only - they told me it arrives usually in separate envelopes). Supposed to arrive Friday at work. But with Memorial Day we have half Fridays so I might only see it on Tuesday... All in all, it'll take exactly 2 weeks door to door for me.

DebbyNSeyi, good luck! The only reason I got expedited service was because honestly my parents abroad are really old and I am always afraid something might happen to them and I'll have to travel last minute :( I don't feel comfy with the idea of being stuck here without being able to travel. FYI - I got the same info mentioned before at my Oath ceremony regarding the SS change: to only go update card 10 days after the Oath, as it won't show in their (governmental?) system before that.

I wonder why they need us to send original Naturalization certificate, why doesn't it also "show in the system" of the people in charge of issuing passports? Oh well. Btw, the same immigration officers said at the Oath ceremony that if USPS loses certificate, too bad for you... they won't pay for a new one, which costs $365. You lose. You have to pay for a new one. Kind of outrageous...

Hey mimigrant,

The passport process is pretty easy and quick. Especially if you paid for expedite service.

I applied with expedited service and received my passport in a week. They will also provide you with a tracking number for USPS on the link you posted above once they have mailed your passport to you.

You will receive 2 separate mailings, 1 with your passport and another one with your Naturalization certificate.

Congrats!

Hi Mimigrant! Thanks for the valuable info! My hubby takes his oath this Thursday, 5/22 at 8:30 A.M. and I already made a passport application appointment at our local post office for 3 P.M. the same day. I'm debating whether to pay for the expedite service since we don't need it until 7/12/14.

Also, can anyone tell me how long it takes to change your status at the SS office from permanent resident to Naturalized citizen? We are going to try and fit that in on Thursday as well after the Oath but before the passport application.

Thanks!

How long does it take normally to get a passport if one doesn't expedite. Does anyone have any experience with this?

We are applying for hubby's passport tomorrow and traveling mid-July..

The government website says 4-6 weeks from the time of application.. so,for mid-july,its kinda tight if you do it the normal way...well i wouldnt take the risk..

Just want to update everyone that my hubby took his oath today at the Federal Courthouse in Central Islip, N.Y. and received his Naturalization Certificate. The whole ceremony took about 2.5 hours and there were about 150 people there becoming citizens. I had to sit in the back with all the other family/friends accompanying the new citizens . It was very interesting and also very emotional!

So, it's all done now...our 7 year visa journey is officially over!!!! YAY!!!

P.S. - FYI, in N.Y. (not sure about other states - you can ask at your oath ceremony), you do NOT have to go to the SS office and inform of a change of citizenship, UNLESS there is a name change or you need to apply for SS benefits immediately. The SS database is updated every 3 months with USCIS status of all new citizens. This information came straight from the Immigration Officer at the courthouse.

Congrats!!!

Interesting, the immigration officers at my NYC Oath instructed everyone present to go to the SS office and update their cards after 10 days of the Oath... oh well. Go figure. I guess there are no clear instructions on that then. I am going, just in case.

And I just got my passport this afternoon! So weird to see "Nationality: UNITES STATES OF AMERICA" under my name on the American passport. Hopefully will get Passport Card and receive back the Naturalization Certificate by email soon.

Done today - 05/09/14! It's been a long journey... that I was more than ready to be done with it...

Hi Mimigrant! When you do go to the SS office, can you please ask them if it is necessary for every new citizen to come in and change their status or if it is just for name changes or people that need to apply for benefits immediately. I would not be surprised if the USCIS is confused (they've given me incorrect info in the past). The best thing would be to ask at the SS office.

If you do remember to ask, can you please post for everyone to know for sure what to do?

Thanks so much!

While I was reading other fellow blogs, it reminded me to share that once upon a time my stay was prolonged for the 5 months and 2 weeks out of USA; the total days were 167 not exact 180 hoping it doesn’t disqualify me for USC . . . correct? As we all know that USCIS cares to count 6 months and longer trips . . . where do I stand?
