We received the notice letter with the case number. But when I tried to find info on the USCIS website for case status, I got this message,

"Your case can not be found at this time in My Case Status. Please check your receipt number and try again. If you need further assistance, please call the National Customer Service Center at 1.800.375.5283."

Check was cashed on Nov. 6.

Should I wait for a longer time?

The Receipt Number is the one you get from your Biometrics Letter, not the NOA. You should wait until you receive the Biometrics letter, and even then, you are not guaranteed timely case status updates online. :)

1:) you just filled on NOV 6 and USCIS database take 45 days to update the case status.

2:) Once you pass the 45 days, and still there is no online updates available for you, so call the helpline number and they will transfer you to tier 2 (higher level assistant) and they will give you update. However I got my NOA1 with receipt number but never case status available online for me and always show CASE CANNOT BE FOUND untill my case transfereed to another service center. I had been kept calling to USCIS number to get the update for 8months.

Dont worry it wont hurt on your case.

The receipt number is the receipt number you receive from your original NOA. It is found on the left hand corner of your NOA letter for I-485, I-130, I-765 and I-130. Each application has a corresponding NOA and receipt number, usually in a series and beginning with MSC. You do not need to wait for your bio letter as it will display the same receipt number corresponding to your I-765 application.

Cheezees is right with respect to the updating of online status. It is possible that your status has not been updated. I remember getting the same error message when I initially accessed my online status to set up an account. I had to wait a day or two before the case status became available for me to set up an account. We all know how exciting an NOA can be and of course, rushing to see updates online cannot be helped but be patient. It will be a couple of days or so before an update (sometimes longer) and about a week (or longer) before your bio letter.

Sein oder Nichtsein, das ist heir die Frage.

As Cheezees said, for ROC it is the number on your biometrics letter that is used to log in to case status, not the number on the NOA.

Sometimes for few cases it takes more time to work, as USCIS forgets to update their database - calling them is a waste. In those few cases the reference number from biometric letter doesn't work but just be patient and it will work after they update their database the next time.

Mine started working after my case was transferred to CSC/ LO - that is when they updated my case online. for all other August filers, it started working from day one.

USA

01/08/13 - Approved and GC is order for production on 1/8/14

09/12/13 - Case transferred to CSC. NOA2 received on 09/18/13

08/30/13 - Biometrics Done - No walk ins allowed at this LSC (received on 8/16/13).

08/05/13 - NOA1 (received on 08/10/13)

08/01/13 - Mailed I-751 (received on 8/2/13 - check cashed on 8/5/13)

12/28/11 - Received SSN (applied on 12/20/11, as we didn't get based on DS-230 options)
11/28/11 - Received Green Card (Expires on 10/30/13) - Welcome Letter on 11/17/11
10/30/11 - POE - Houston, TX

Chennai Consulate (40 days)
10/28/11 - Received Visa papers and Passport at VFS
10/25/11 - Interview Cleared Successfully (Spouse was not allowed in)

NVC: (90 days from NOA2 to Consulate)
08/31/11 - Case Completed (Interview 10/25/11) - Received at Chennai on 09/19/11
07/22/11 - NVC Case Number

USCIS: (92 days)

6/21/11 - NOA2 (NOA1 on 3/25/11) - took a month to get to NVC
3/21/11 - I-130 sent to USCIS Lockbox, Chicago.

This is for ROC not AOS. For ROC, you have to use the number from your ASC biometrics appointment letter in order to check your status.

It states on the I-797 receipt notice/extension letter that you use the number from your biometrics letter.

"Upon receipt of your ASC appointment notice, you can find the status of your case on-line at www.uscis.gov. To view the status of your case, enter the application number found at the top of the ASC appointment notice. NOTE: The I-751 form type will be listed as "CRI89" under the application type in our case status on-line tool."
