Any benefits of getting the ss# before marriage?

The main benefit is that you have it sooner, and can start in doing normal "life" things (bank accounts, utility bills, state ID, basically anything official) without having to wait. I was itching for my now-husband to get his SSN as soon as possible, because we wanted to start co-mingling all of our stuff, and the extra three week delay from the government shutdown really got on my nerves. But he has it now and we're doing all of those things.

The other main benefit in getting SSN before marriage is: the staff at the SocSec offices really don't know much, and they are likely to deny you a SSN if you go in after you're already married, saying your K1 is no longer valid because you're not a fiance. That is false -- you're totally eligible up until 2 weeks before the expiration of the I-94 -- but it's a huge headache to have to get supervisors and go to different more knowledgeable people, so it really is MUCH easier before marriage. We went four days before our marriage and I'm glad we did, because the very first snapped, imperious question from the clerk was "are you already married!" and I sighed in relief that we weren't.

By all means, go and get it ASAP. Sooner is better. There seem to be lots of offices that want to refuse a SSN after marriage, but ours must have had an educated clerk, because we took passport with I-94 in it, marriage cert, and SS-5 and applied for it in her married name.

As for NEEDING one? Not needed at all until you start working for tax purposes, but you may as well get it. It's generally thought that it's required to have one to open or be added to a bank account, but that it false info. However, many banks THINK they can require it. So again, it's just easier to have it than not, and the price is right...

We already applied for the ss card. Found out that POE didnt include her full name. so we have to contact them to get it corrected.
