When you and I become co-consoles, I'll be ok with limiting gun production and beefed up buy back programs and you can introduce spending hikes in mental illness research and treatment. Granted I would venture that most of the deaths caused by "bad guys" are not traditional mental cases. Probably more people settling scores for one reason or another.

Suicide is a mental health problem. Many shootings are to settle some kind of stupid score. Ask Aaron Hernandez. He gave up $40 million and an NFL career to settle a score. As he sits in jail without bail waiting to go on trial. These score settlers aren't the sharpest tacks in the package, that's for sure. Drive by's shooting into a group of people, another example of brilliance. Protect the innocent people and let the idiots kill each other and then take their guns.

Like I said, you'll never fix the root violence problem. It will always exist. People will always kill each other. That doesn't mean we shouldn't work towards limiting that amount that are killed by making its "less easy" I think the availability and gun culture has actually put killing in play for some people. Let two guys with road rage slug it out. The ease and availability of the gun tied in with "God given right to defend themselves with it" makes people too hasty to bring the gun out in a situation that only requires it the second they brought it out.
