Dude, I'm a white Mexican-American. Mexican-American is (part) of my ethnicity; my race is Caucasian. Mexican is not a race. German is not a race. American is not a race. Australian is not a race. The definition you provide above which cites "the German race" refers to, I believe, the Nazi concept of the Germanic peoples as the so-called "Master Race." It is not a term which has much meaning outside of that. Tell me, how many times have you heard people speak of "the American race"?

Asian and sub-Saharan African peoples are generally considered to be of fairly homogeneous races but there are white Africans and black Asians. Mexico, Canada, America, Germany are multi-racial countries. Not like Botswana. Not like South Korea. Furthermore, you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who would agree with your analysis that "American" or "German" is a race. It's all well and good that you know how to access Wikipedia and a dictionary, but being able to parse the information contained therein is important. Moreover, many scholars believe race to be a social construct that has less biological basis than it once was believed to have. We are humans -- we like to categorise. Race is one of our ways of making sense of the world, of grouping, of making some "us" and the rest "others," for better or for worse.

I never alluded to Asians in my earlier statement. I'm utterly baffled as to how you arrived at this.

You alluded to Asians by excluding them when you said Mexican is not a race, thereby implying that Asian is.

And for the record, you are NOT Caucasian, unless your ancestors are from the Caucus region of Asia.

The "race" and "racist" cards are played WAY too often in this world, as reflected on this site. I agree that there is little value in using the term. We're all just humans from various regions and backgrounds. The terms are WAY over-abused.

Caucasian.... You made me laugh, thanks!!

Wow! What is "those" people?

Are they a different category of people that are not really people?

Those people refer to a certain group of people. if they weren't people, I would have used a different word to describe them. Don't try to twist my words.

"Those apples" refer to a particular set of apples, as opposed to another set or perhaps the group of peaches close by.

Sorry if English confuses you; it's about my only language.

I understand quite well what you were implying. Trying to change what you were implying does not change what you implied.

I think I will just laugh at your comment. rofl.gif

Speechless. Seriously, if you want to engage on the topic of race, you should at least have a passing knowledge of the topic. Being unfamiliar with the term "Caucasian" as it pertains to race indicates that you are unfamiliar with the nomenclature. And yes, being "Asian" is considered to be of a distinct race if one buys into the social construct of race.

I'm not unfamiliar with the term. I just refuse to go along with the (all too common) misconception that I am supposed to check Caucasian on forms when it comes to race. I am not Caucasian, nor are any of my relatives.

I have more than a passing knowledge, thank you. I receive regular training on it. Not that I agree with it all, but I am trained. By your statement that Mexican is not a race, then Germans are not, Asians are not, Africans are not. I'm good with that. But most of America considers them "races", wouldn't you agree?

I think with the world mixing that we have today, trying to define a race of people has become very difficult if not impossible. The lines are too blurred.

I understand quite well what you were implying. Trying to change what you were implying does not change what you implied.

I wasn't implying anything. I was using "those people" to refer back to the word Muslims. Simple.

The best part is when they try to convince you it has nothing to do with race.

Someone tried to tell me that lostinblue just means "Kenyan American" when he says that ... rofl.gif

I never said that

What I said was that I don't see how identifying his Continent of ancestry is politically correct and identifying his country of ancestry is racist.

I hate the word Asian. I have nothing in common with some dude outta Beijing. Nothing. And yet we're both supposedly Asian.

Me and that guy outta Beijing don't even like the same kind of Chinese food. He eats eels. I like General Tso's chicken cooked in Thai peanut sauce.
