Possible to travel with AP if AoS approved but no GC?

Hi all,

My wife has her AP already. She was going to use that to travel. But then her AoS went and got approved without interview. There's a high likelihood that she won't have her green card with her when she leaves. Can she still use her AP to enter? Or has it been rendered invalid because her AoS was approved?

I've heard mixed things on this exact scenario, ranging from "it's fine to do" all the way up to "the AP is invalidated when the green card is approved".

If possible you should make an Infopass appointment and have your wife take her valid foreign passport and I-485 approval notice (the one printed on security paper), they would then be able to give her an I-551 stamp in her passport which would serve as temporary proof of a green card for up to one year. That stamp will allow her to re-enter the country without issue.
