trying to get Social Security Card based on K-1 Visa

Well I don't know where or who you heard that from but I guess that is still one option but if you got married more or less right away, then your husband should of been able to apply for a new card because the I-94 last 90 days. Here is how the K1 works though:

When it is first received, the person who is coming to the US has 6 months to do so because that's how long is it valid for..

The six month clock does not start when the visa is received, but from the medical exam date. It is possible to get a visa in hand and only have 40 days left to arrive in the US.

but once they enter the US, it is only valid for 90 days because you have to get married within those 90 days. Therefore once you get married the K1 is no longer valid

Once you enter the US, the K1 is invalid. The I-94 picks up the burden of proof of you being a legal immigrant, and it is valid for 90 days. It is now an online thing, not a card in your passport as of 2013.

but the I-94 I think is still valid until the 90th day. What I looked up/heard is that you should wait at least 2 weeks after the person arrives to go apply for a SS card (which is what I did) Then after you get married, go back and apply for a name change on the SS card. This didn't work out well for me and my husband because we got married towards the end of the 90 days, therefore when we did go back to apply for a name change the I-94 was less than 14 days from expiring so they couldn't issue me a new card. I finally went back to the SS Office last week because I have recently received my EAD Card and I was able to apply for a name change this time.

If they wouldn't allow him to apply for a name change on the card right now then you might have to wait till down the road when he gets his EAD Card.

Hope this helps.

Julz - not trying to pick apart your reply, but trying to clarify some of your points. Incorrect info has a tendency to spread around here and can be unhelpful at times.

Old thread I realize, but reading the above link ( doesn't it say the K-1 DOESN'T NEED WORK AUTHORIZATION TO WORK?

K-1 IS UNDER THIS HEADING.

1. Aliens employment-authorized without specific DHS authorization

The following chart lists, by COA code, non-immigrants authorized to work in the U.S. without specific authorization from DHS. The alien's I-94 showing one of the following COAs has employment authorization unless otherwise noted. The I-94 will not have the DHS employment authorization stamp and the alien will generally not have an EAD.
