Guns & Ammo Fires Editor After Publishing Editorial Calling for Gun Control

by Andrew Kirell

November 7th, 2013

Guns and Ammo Magazine, the “world’s most widely read firearms magazine,” has fired contributing editor ####### Metcalf after the publication received immense backlash for its December 2013 issue featuring his editorial advocating for gun control.

“Way too many gun owners still seem to believe that any regulation of the right to keep and bear arms is an infringement,” Metcalf wrote in the column titled “Let’s Talk Limits.” “The fact is, all constitutional rights are regulated, always have been, and need to be.”

“All U.S. citizens have a right to keep and bear arms,” he added, “but I do not believe that they have a right to use them irresponsibly.”

The backlash was immense. Readers flocked to social media to decry the magazine’s editorial decision and threaten to cancel their subscriptions. All the attention resulted in the magazine’s editor Jim Bequette posting a letter online apologizing to readers and announcing that Guns & Ammo has fired the author.

“####### Metcalf has had a long and distinguished career as a gunwriter, but his association with ‘Guns & Ammo’ has officially ended,” Bequette wrote after reassuring readers “Our commitment to the Second Amendment is unwavering.”

...

“I made a mistake by publishing the column,” he continued. “I thought it would generate a healthy exchange of ideas on gun rights. I miscalculated, pure and simple. I was wrong, and I ask your forgiveness.”

He then announced his own resignation earlier than anticipated. “Plans were already in place for a new editor to take the reins of ‘Guns & Ammo’ on January 1,” Bequette wrote. “However, these recent events have convinced me that I should advance that schedule immediately.”

He shouldn't have asked for forgiveness. I agree with his insight. It's a shame he was fired for it.

Seems like it's their right.

It's a sad thing when common sense and regard for human life takes a back seat to 2nd amendment rights.

Sorry, I don't worship the Constitution. I think common sense, logic, and compassion should come into play in all aspects of life. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

WOW!

Nothing I can add to that it speaks for itself

So then why do you get so worked up when a black is wrongly accused of shoplifting. I mean if rights mean nothing

I care about rights of ALL people, but when those rights are abused and lives are lost, something should be looked at.

You don't seem to care about the rights of a woman that was told she is banned from a school for being a Vet and having a WCL
