The moment an overdosing heroin addict was revived by a new life-saving drug has been released as campaigners push for the medication to be provided to police officers.

A drug called Naloxone, also known by the brand name Narcan, can revive these addicts during an overdose, but only if it's quickly administered.

In an effort to push for the disbursement of the drug to non-medical first responders and even non-emergency workers, CNN's Dr Sanjay Gupta showed a video of how one 29-year-old addict got a second chance from the drug.

Do you really not understand evolutionary theory or are you just playing dumb for effect? Yes, hiding behind these ridiculous euphemisms is what you are doing. If you want drug addicts to die from overdoses just say so because what you have said is plainly nonsense - natural selection is not involved.

Why wouldn't evolution be involved? If someone who is predisposed to addiction (and there is a genetic component to addiction) dies it would be an excellent way for them not to breed and create more people that have that genetic attribute.

I personally think genetics have little to do with it. Of course if you're raised around people that are addicts, then you're chances of becoming one yourself are increased. Does that mean that children raised in good households by good parents will never become addicts? Of course not.

On the flip side of that argument I can see people saying, "My parents were addicts, so that's why I get high" It's simply another excuse for people to not take responsibility for their actions and blame it on someone else. That's the problem with this country. It's always someone else's fault.

I come from a long line of drug abuses/alcoholics. Every man on my father's and mother's side has battled with some form of drug or alcohol addiction. That's why I abstain from it. It might be in my genes, but I'll be damned if I let it ruin me or my family.

Good choice. Why take the chance.

Guess what runs in my family on my Mothers side..Obesity . To me that is a curse worse than alcoholism, because you can't just abstain from eating.

Too true, I love me some food. One of my childhood friend's has this affliction. He dodged it for a while, now it'####### like a ton of bricks(pun intended).

I'm a former paramedic. And yes, like it or not,saving junkies was part of the job. Or any other unpopular group of people. Pre hospital care doesn't discriminate in the way John Doe sitting at home does.

I don't know why they are saying Narcan is new though. I graduated 27 years ago, and used it then in training, and many times on the street.

If they plan on giving that to non medical people, they better put this on the label: Stand back after administering. Patient will frequently come up swinging. You have just ruined the high they paid quite a bit of money for. Your efforts will not be appreciated.
