Strange things Americans have said to you

Just had to start this topic after a good friend of husband's asked me for whom I was going to vote in the local mayoral elections. He was flabbergasted that I wasn't a citizen (received Green card in May 2013) and thought that I 'automatically' became a US citizen at marriage! Another friend asked me if I had fulfilled my life's dream by coming to America! He was shocked when I told him that I only came to the USA because my hubby wouldn't move to Canada! luv.gif

Because apparently America is much better than Canada...I have had people confused about the citizenship thing too. Just because I married an American, does not make me a citizen off the bat!

I would move back to Canada in a HEARTBEAT. There is so much I miss there. The only reason I moved here is because my husband makes much more money than I did in Canada and there are no jobs in my hometown for him since it is a tourist/retirement town. Not much going on! My husband would be happy to move to Canada as well. Provided he found a good job.

Anyway, I get asked if I am getting used to the summers down here. I get asked this constantly. Some people here actually believe that it is cold all year. I just tell them that I have always enjoyed summer at the beach in Canada in my hometown, so I am more than used to the summers here! I find that the summer lasts much longer here though so I always tell them that I am looking forward to the winter lol! It is pretty cool here now and I see people wearing winter jackets, hats, mittens and even boots! I'm still wearing my trusty jean jacket, open with a thin decorative scarf!

I have actually had American customers at my old job at Tim Hortons years ago ask how much further north they have to go to get to the ski hills, and have skis on the roof of their car...I'm like, you gotta go WAY north for that! Drive for a few more days maybe! Just cuz we have ski hills doesn't mean they operate as such all year!

If I'm asked if I'm cold I would say yes I hate the cold. Then they go on with but you're from Canada! Yes I am and I know how to turn the heat on.

My wife is from Windsor, Ontario which is pretty much straight across the map from Boston where we live. She is constantly barraged with the cold winter bs in Canada by people here. "Do people there live in igloos"? Little do they know that the winters here in Mass are the same if not worse than in Windsor. She also gets the "up there in Canada" bs too. And people are always asking stupid questions like "Do you have ketchup in Canada" or "What kind of cars do they drive up there"??

Sometimes I'm ashamed to say that these are my fellow Americans asking these foolish questions and showing their ignorance.

FTR, the Canadian Ketchup is sweeter. Even the American brands change their recipe to coincide with Canadian palates. I had that realization at a Wendy's when eating fries with ketchup. It was a bad day. Not a fan.

I find American ketchup to be sweeter. And brighter red. I prefer Canadian!

canadian ketchup is definitely sweeter... I finally found an organic ketchup that is comparable to Canadian Heinz ketchup.. Even the American organic heinz ketchup isn't as good as the Canadian Heinz

every year my SIl asks me the same question about the holidays and every year I tell her," yes, we celebrate Christmas and Easter on the same day. Thanksgiving is the only one we don't.."

If it's not the, "But you two are married, isn't she a citizen!" It's, "Is she a Communist?" since she's Bulgarian. Or the whole, "What language do they speak there?"
My grandparents thought she was black for some reason, since I think they assume all countries that aren't the U.S. are Africa. :P

I am the USC.

Do they have a 4th of July in Canada?

Everyone has a 4th of July, it's not like you can just erase it off the calendar. tongue.png

If you mean an equivalent to the US Independence Day, yes there is Canada Day on July 1st.
