I know you have done a lot to get answers for this and to get this petition approved. I am truly sorry this is taking so long, and that you are suffering :( I wish it weren't so. Hang in there, regardless of what it takes and the time it is, an answer will come <3

Thank you for all the kind and comforting words. Watching filers got approved before us is hurting. We've done a lot of things already. :'( But still nothing. It feels like giving up already. :'(

Still waiting for the custody situation to have a hearing scheduled so we can decide it once and for all.

A while back, it was suggested on another thread on here that I should have handled this prior to the visa process. The thing is, if we hadn't started the visa process, I wouldn't have been able to get the situation handled, because it would all have been based on a "supposed intention to emigrate". We sent the papers to USCIS in November, and I notified my ex straight away about my plans. In December I asked him for the authorization. So it's not even like I waited until the last minute, either.

It just sucks that my life is on hold because of our court system, and because of his selfishness, especially given that he himself has left the country. :(

Had it not been for him, I could probably be in the US right now. The waiting has been extremely draining. :(

Wonderful! I'm so pleased for you both! May you have a long and happy life together!

Here's some practical info that may be of use in terms of 'what next'...

1. Go to your local social security office and apply for a Social Security number. It's key to loads of things here. There's a guide on this website about how to apply. It recommends you wait 2 weeks before applying, I waited 6 days and had no problems and the card arrived 4 days later.

2. Apply for a state ID at your local DMV / BMV. This is another major step and will make the process of opening a bank account much easier. The card they will give you will probably expire on the same date that was stamped in your passport yesterday. You won't be able to extend that date until your receive EAD / AP card.

3. If you don't have any set marriage plans and if it suits your circumstances get married sooner rather than later. EAD & AP applications are taking around the 70 day mark at the moment and the sooner you get the petition in the better!

All the best!

Great advice, thank you for posting this. We are going to get the SS card this week sometime and then we will get the State ID. No set plans for marriage but we are shooting for an early october date.

Hi Darwood!! I dont know how you applied for state ID, but i could not produce anyone! In in California and INdiana you still have to waiting for your green card to be ready! Social card is possible, but with only working authorization, will say on the front. So I have been waiting for this such a long time, for get such a previldge making ID,... I got here in February, and I still dont have status, i dont drive, but you can open bank account anytime, you need your passport! :) I cannot wait my green card, and shout out!!! finally, i can get insurance, id card, and live happily ever with my American Husband!

It's amazing how things are different state by state isn't it!. Chase told me no bank account without a state issued ID period. A friend in Vegas got a Chase account without a State ID no questions asked. Often it depends upon the person you get.

I've been lucky to get a state ID card, SSN, health insurance, buy my own car, get car insurance (using my British driving licence) all pre green card.

My state ID has now expired though but I'm going to try and extend it once I get my EAD card. The next job will then be to get an Ohio driving licence.
