My wife has a conditional 2-year green card.

We need to get her a SSN asap. I have the form filled out and ready to go Monday.

Is it possible to get verified and leave the SS office with a number then wait the 2-3 weeks for the card to arrive in the mail?

Just need the number at the moment, no rush on the card. Hope its possible to get a SSN without waiting so long.

1. Insurance does not require a SSN. Talk to a supervisor; they don't need it.

2. Why didn't you get a SSN long before, say, when she got her EAD?

I don't believe they can give you the number the same day. I have read of situations where you are able to return 24 - 48 hours after applying and they can give you a print-out of the number, and then the card arrives in the mail in a week or two in the normal way; you may want to ask if this is an option in your case.

Some insurance companies (mine included) DO require a SSN. However, my company is going to use a "default" SSN until my husband is assigned one. We're going next week to the Social Security Office.

Some people not be aware of them being able to use a default SSN if they're not assigned one yet, so keep asking until you get an answer.

Our insurance company also does require, they wouldn't use a default so we can't really do much until the actual SSN is processed.

Good info, but newborn babies, for instance, don't have a SSN and they have insurance. I agree there has to be some way the insurance can do their paperwork without it. It's just an identifying number.
