Hello all,

Just wondering how you can get a health insurance for a first-time senior citizen immigrant.

I'm planning to get a health insurance for my senior citizen mom but I heard that she cannot get Medicaid insurance

benefits because I signed an affidavit of support for her and that if she gets benefits from the government, I will need to

repay all the benefits that we get from the government. Also, she will not be qualified for Medicare since she's a first-time

immigrant without work experience in the US.

Do you know which health insurance company to choose? Should we just use a private insurance company like Blue Cross, Lovelace, etc? How much is the average monthly premium?

Please advise, thank you.

Depending on her age and previous conditions you may be paying from 500 to 3000 a month for an average policy and much more for a full coverage one. Your mother will probably never qualify for medicare or social security benefits so be prepared to pay for the rest of her life

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Since your mom never paid into medicare, she can purchase medicare:

2013 montly rate:

Part A - $441 ($426 - 2014 rate)

Part B - $104.90 (2014 remains the same)

Thanks for the information Umka36. Wow, that's a lot!

Is it possible if I just add her (my mom) as my dependent in my health insurance?

After all, I can claim her as my dependent in the 1040 Yr. 2013 taxes.
