Japan Police Certificate

I need to get a police clearance from the Japan Embassy in Manila for the K-1 visa since I lived there for more than 6 months in the past.

I've been reading older threads on VJ on this precise topic. Some say I would need to go to the US Embassy, present my copy of NOA2 and MNL case # to Window X, then ask the embassy to issue a request letter for the Japanese police certificate. Others say a copy of NOA1 and the I-129F packet sent to USCIS are enough.

Does anyone have the latest info on how to obtain the police clearance from the Japan embassy? I'm still waiting for my NOA2, but we have the copy of NOA1 and we sent our reply to the RFE via DHL last 28 October 2013. I want to be proactive about the process hence my inquiry.

Thanks for any reply!

My fiancee did this back in May of this year. She just showed the NOA 1 and told the embassy staff that she was applying for a US visa. She didn't have any issues with the embassy staff, but it took about 9 weeks for the certificate to come. I would recommend trying to get it now so you aren't waiting for it after you get the NOA 2. I hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply. When you mention embassy staff, do you mean US Embassy staff or Japan Embassy staff?

So did the US Embassy issue a request letter to the Japan embassy for police certificate of your fiancé when your fiancé went to the US Embassy with just the NOA1 copy in hand? Or did your fiancé go directly to the Japan embassy with just the NOA1 copy to request the police certificate?

Again, thanks in advance for your reply.

Last October 7, 2013, i went to Japan Embassy Manila to request for my Japan Police Certificate since like you, i've lived in Japan for almost 3 years as well. Based on my experience, when the japanese lady in the window called me, i just told her that i will request for police clearance then she gave me instructions to go to Camp Crame to get my finger prints done. She didn't asked me for any letter from the US Embassy. But just in case, bring your photocopy of your NOA1 or any documents that will prove you are currently applying for K-1 Visa. You should have your 1x1 or 2x2 photo for your finger prints. So now, i am still waiting for it. they said it will be 2-3 months til you get your police clearance but a lot here says that its just 1 month to 1 1/2 month.

I was referring to the Japanese Embassy staff. She just went straight to the Japanese Embassy. We were only 2 months into the wait on the petition when she made the request, so the only letter we had from USCIS was the NOA 1. The Japanese staff were helpful and all they really wanted to know was what visa she was applying for and what country she would be going to. She told me the staff just looked at the NOA 1 and then took down her information and then had her pay the fee. They also told her that she should call them at the end of each month to check to see if the certificate had come yet or not. The Japanese Embassy always says it could take up to 3 months, but they tend to come faster. The certificate comes sealed and it is already in english so you don't have to worry about translations.

It is also really helpful to bring her alien registration card from Japan. It will make the process a little quicker if she can show it when she goes.

@katxleo

Thank you for the reply with details. I think I will wait for the NOA2 and present a copy of that to the Japanese Embassy in Manila when requesting the Japan police clearance. Lots of luck to your visa application!

Just got done filing for the Japan police clearance. The form says to wait for 2-3 months but the Japanese woman at the counter told me it should be ready within 2 months. And you are right that one 2x2 OR 1x1 photo is required by Camp Crame for fingerprinting.

Thanks for the advice/info!

Hi! I still don't have the clearance itself. But I have submitted my fingerprints to the Japan embassy, so from here on out, it's a waiting game. I plan to call them after 1 month just to check if they have the clearance.

  • 2 weeks later...

Today is the 45th day since i filed my japan police certificate in Japan Embassy Manila, but i called them and said that they still don't have it. It is very very frustrating and the fact that my interview is on next week, monday, Nov. 25.

I will have an incomplete requirements. I am starting to anticipate the 221g form. :(

I was reading your other post in the K-1 visa progress forum. So you have an upcoming interview at USEM but still no Japan police clearance to show? Maybe you can reschedule your interview until you get the clearance?

1.5 months since filing for police clearance and yet Japan embassy still doesn't have it? That's too bad. Lots of luck on your upcoming interview. Maybe the USEM will just ask you to submit the clearance once you get it.
