Got a question about getting my fiancee now wife a SSN.

We got married this month and went down to the SSA office to get a # for her along with the name change.

They said they could not give her one as we were already married. The processor stated if she came in to get the number before she was married she would be ok but because now she is no longer a "fiancee" we must wait till the AOS is completed before she could get an SSN.

Is this true? Are we stuck to wait mths or year + until our AOS is approved or is there a way around this?

I am wondering if he rejected our application because we were trying to change her name as well. If we kept it her mainden name would it get approved? The processor did not give this as an option for us..

Thanks

Not true, although I believe she would only be able to get it in her maiden name until she receives at least an EAD (or better yet, a green card).

If a K-1 has at least 14 days of validity left on their I-94 then they are entitled to a social security number just by virtue of their K-1 status. Beyond that, you need an EAD or green card.

I went in for mine today, I took SSN form 5, copy of marriage cert, I 94 and passport with K1 visa in it. I am a bloke so do not have the name change issue, however I was there only 10 mins and they said you should have it in a week.

Did you take they extract from soc sec website as mentioned in the guide here? They asked for my marriage cert so what you are being told is nonsense.

hi nobbie

yes we had it all ready for them - form 5 filled out, a certified copy of the marriage cert, print out of the i-94, passport with k1 visa. our adjuster took 15 minutes to do his own personal work (putting things in his wallet) as well as talking to others in the office (i think he was ready to go to lunch) and then spent 5 minutes looking over our document and mentioned for us to wait. he went somewhere (i think to talk to supervisor) and came back and said could not be done as we were already married so she was not a fiancee any longer (we were married) so k1 and i-94 was no longer valid. We would have to wait for the AOS to completed and gave us a number to call (immigration number 1-800-375-5283). I did not call that number yet as we at that time had not sent in the aos yet - we just sent it in.

There is a few offices not so far away from us we going to try tomorrow. Hopefully we will have better luck with another aos office.

thanks all we were able to get an ssn finally! - we did it with her maiden name. I didn't want to rock the boat too much persay as the adjuster we had never seen an online i-94 printout before so we were just happy to get an ssn.

Once the card comes in would i be able to go to the office and change the name right away since we have the marriage certificate or should we wait a while to get the name change done?
