I think we can be fairly sure that obesity among children is a sure sign of parenting fail.

When that happens, society steps in and acts like a compass for good behavior. The quote she used is correct "it takes a whole village to raise a child". As a kid, my behavior was corrected not just by my parents, but by my neighbors as well, who stepped right in when they saw I was engaging in a bad behavior and there was no adult around me.

This isn't shaming. I had this growing up as well, but never did my family or neighbors made me feel like I was less of a person for my shortcomings. What she is doing is rude, plain and simple. She's worried about kids weight? Start a website that promotes healthy eating. Don't embarass some poor child on the one night eating candy is acceptable.

That would be true if the individuals in question were adults, capable of looking at the issue objectively and with enough self-confidence to take the advice as such.

As she is handling our these pamphlets to kids, all she is doing is hurting the kids in several ways. It shows she has little common sense when she expects to be effecting positive change in such a harsh manner.

Perhaps her method might be effective were it aimed to a completely different audience.

I like the suggestion for parents to get outside and participate in outdoor activities with their kids, maybe Americans should switch to European model, less hours at work, long vacation times does not sound bad at all.

I agree, it's pointless. Society is always looking for an easy answer to blame for a problem. My guess would be unless candy makes up a large part of an overweight kids diet, it's not the reason for the excess weight.

Excess sugar plays a part in obesity, but at the same time, a glass of milk or a bowl of dry cereal can each have as much sugar as many candy bars. Add a glass of orange juice to that and kids may be getting the equivalent of up to three candy bars worth of sugar for breakfast. That's a bigger problem IMO, and some folks eat that every day without realizing how much sugar they're getting.

I do think sugar is a big factor in weight gain in adults, but I don't think it is as much in healthy, growing kids. When I was a kid, my parents had to go to great lengths to make sure I didn't eat the whole bag of halloween candy in one night, but even if I did down half of it, I was sick the next day and back to normal the day after and IIRC, I didn't want to see candy again until Christmas after that.
