I think we're planning to get my wife's step dad to sponser. He has a sufficient income, a stable job and has filed his taxes for the past 3 years. I obviously can add no income/assets, and my wife doesn't have any assets either.

I was just unsure for how much documentated proof they will want from my wife since she does not make enough to sponser. But that being said, I'll just overkill it to try and avoid an RFE. The more information I can provide from both of them, the better!

Sorry for all the confusing wording, it made more sense in my head!

Thanks all :)

Well if your spouse isn't above poverty guidelines even with assets/tips, you do not add assets or proof of it. Assets won't be taken into consideration unless they bring the combines income and assets above poverty guidelines. However, the W2 is needed since your wife is the primary sponsor, has an income and has filed taxes.

Remember, stepdad needs to count you as part of household size on his affadavit of support.

My wife's W2 for 2012 only or the past 3 years as well?

So would the household size be 3 then? My wife, myself and him? or does he also have to claim his other dependents as well, i.e. his wife and his son, or is that irrelevant even because they're already US citizens and don't need sponsoring?

A W2 is part of a tax return, so if you are including 3 years of tax returns, then you will need W2s from all years (that is, if she gets a W2, not all people do, some get 1099s instead or other things).

The Father-in-law's household will be whoever is in his house, wife, children, anyone he claimed on his tax return, plus you, the immigrant. You can read about this in the instructions.

Okay, so 3 tax transcripts and the necessary W2s for both my spouse and the co-sponsor.

Alright, so even though her step dad lives in Texas alone for work, his wife and son would still be considered in his household because he supports them financially despite not *literally* living in the same household? and my wife and I would be considered to be under his household for the purpose of him co-sponsoring, or would I only include myself and not her because I'm the immigrant?

I'll re-read everything in the instructions again, but thank you for your quick and detailed responses though, you've been extremely helpful!

Is the step dad still married? Does he file joint taxes with his wife and include his kids on his tax returns? If so then he includes them all in his count. He needs only to add you, the immigrant, to his household count. Not your USC wife.

I think there is a household count helper in the instructions and on the form itself.

He's still married, I'll have to double check who he filed under his taxes but I'm pretty sure it's just himself, his wife and his son.

Thank you again!
