I am filing an I-130 and -1485 for my wife who has at this point overstayed her B2 visitor visa and was wondering if you need a pending job offer to file the I-765 or if she would file this to be allowed to look for work while waiting for a green card?

We did, wife couldn't do anything without it, we did receive a NOA stating she was free to stay here about two weeks after we send in that pile of forms for that AOS. But she couldn't do anything, with the APA, couldn't even set up a bank account for her. Had to make a trip to our field office for biometrics. Her EAD card has her photo on it, was good for a year.

With that we could get a probationary SS card, she could look for a job, and finally could set up a joint bank account. AOS interview was taking over a year, so she got nine months out of that card. Also got one for my stepdaughter so she had some form of ID and legally attend school. Well she could according to the supreme court, but not according to the DOS. But didn't want any problems so paid the extra 300 bucks. Called this era of our lives living in the twilight zone. Or the Nazi German stage, have to show somebody your papers.

Back then, never had to apply for an SS card until we were 16, but today as soon as a baby is born, can't do anything without that SS card. Like opening a two buck college fund.
