Taxes, ITIN and getting back the originals for interview(s)

Not sure if this is in the right forum...

I want to file jointly for 2013, so I want to get an ITIN for my husband. From reading the requirements for the W-7, it seems like the IRS wants original documents and then can take up to 6 months to process them.

Chances are he'll/we'll need those originals back before the IRS is done with them. And I'd hate to take the chance they'll get lost.

Has anyone gotten their ITIN mid-CR1 processing? Any issues with getting back documents? Any hints (maybe they'll take certified copies)?

5/26/2013 Married
6/12/2013 NOA1
8/20/2013 Master Calendar Hearing postponed
10/1/2013 MCH postponed again due to shutdown! More time for USCIS to process I-130 before mi amor has to take VD.
12/24/2013 Case transferred to CSC (60 days is 2/22/14)
1/23/2014 USCIS transfer notice 2 back to NBC (Lee's Summit)
1/27-28 USCIS transfer notice 3, 4 & 5 - eventually lands in TSC
2/19/2014 New MCH hearing. Voluntary departure by June 19, 2014.
6/6/2014 Finally have the I-130 interview. Approved on the spot! NOA2
6/17/2014 Mi amor left to comply with voluntary departure order... :cry:

You can get the copies of the original documents 'CERTIFIED' by the US consulate/Embassy in your husbands country and then send them to the IRS.

Of course that consulate/embassy should provide that service.

Thanks for the info! He's still in the US at the moment, but thankfully the Salvador embassy is in town. However, the documents provided by the Salvadoran embassy here leave much to be desired. The "certified" copy of his birth certificate was a copy of a copy of a certified copy :/

No thats not what I told.

The documents should be certified by the US consulate back in Salvador.

You can also apply in person

In person. You can apply for an ITIN by bringing your completed forms and documentation to any IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in the United States or IRS office abroad. Designated IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) will be able to verify passports and National ID documents and return them immediately. See IRS.gov for a list of designated TACs that are available for assistance in completing applications and will forward documents to our processing center in Austin, Texas, for processing. Information on our overseas offices can be found in Pub. 1915 or at IRS.gov.

Thank you!! I missed that. There is an IRS center close to us. I just would feel much better not mailing such important documents.
