Another department store customer came forward Sunday with the fourth “shopping while black” complaint in a week — a customer who says he was surrounded by cops after a legitimate purchase at Macy’s Herald Square in New York.

In an eerie echo of the three prior allegations of racial profiling last week, Art Palmer said four plainclothes cops questioned him just three blocks away from the flagship store after he bought $320 worth of Polo dress shirts and ties April 24.

If folks want to do something more effective than complain, boycott Macy's and Barneys. Hit them where it hurts - their profit margin. I could never afford Barneys but I've certainly stopped spending my money at Macy's.

True, I never shopped at Barney's(I think this is a New York store) but I've been to Macy's a few times since we have one here. Problem is, at the Macy's here, I'm treated rather well. The women that work the perfume and suits section are always nice to me and my wife.

I don't think this is really a set in stone store policy or nationwide problem. It more likely depends on the demographics of the location and their individual store profit losses due to theft. At the very least their employees need to be retrained. I'd say NYPD needs re-training, but that's an impossible prospect. It would be like attempting to train a mean old junkyard dog to be a therapy pet for sick children.

Macy's Herald Square is their big flagship NY store, the biggest department store in the world. It's the one you see in movies, the one Miracle on 34th St. takes place at, etc.

That place is a crazy zoo all the time, the walking areas are completely filled with people.

The staff and security there should have the highest level of training and be able to make sound judgements. Looks like they failed.

But this happened in April, he's coming forward now because of the Barney's thing?

It's like sexual harrassment. You notice how all it takes is for one person to come forward, then you have a whole boatload of folks? This stuff is more common than folks on here want to admit. A lot of times, they will just keep it moving because it's the norm in some places.

Or it could be folks coming forward because they others not willing to put up with it.

Palmer said a lieutenant at the midtown South stationhouse told him the officers “were just doing their jobs.”

Frustrated by that response, Palmer filed a grievance with the Civilian Complaint Review Board.

This was April 24th, so he filed his complaint a while ago.

I think that people should make complaints and come forward any time this happens, until it doesn't happen at all.

You say he filed a complaint in April, so that is good. It's possible the news is only interested now.

I feel the same way. I know it's a traumatizing experience to go through, but it's best to come forward now than later.

Yes, the article said he filed one so at least that part is on the level.
