I'll dig through it tonight. Someone mentioned that if I married her, I'd have to wait till after aos to get her ssn.

That's the reasoning used by most clerks in the SSA.

You are allowed to get SSN after getting married through a K1. However, some people (clerks) in the SSA would think that since your name in your visa is different since you already got married then your K1 is expired and you have to file for AOS and EAD first and use those as identification documents. This thinking of theirs is totally wrong btw and what the other posters say about the I-94 is correct.

What most people do now is that they apply SSN before getting married. Meaning they apply with their maiden name. Then after the SSN card is released they go back to the SSA and have the name change. 2 trips total.

Some people are lucky because they have well informed clerks or they talk to the supervisors or someone higher than the clerks and they get their SSN using their married names.

It's really all about your willingness to make the extra trip now. People who wants to be sure just go and apply with the maiden name.

Good luck! smile.png

Does the k1 visa expire after marriage preventing you from getting a SSN?

The K-1 visa expires the second you enter the USA, after that the I-94 is used. THAT is what is used to get the SSN (in reality)

Thank you, I want to save the extra trip. But maybe I should just suffer 2 visits to the office. Makes me sick just thinking about making 2 trips.

We did two trips. The first was two days after my wife arrived. The second was after we got married and AOS was approved so the card reflected both her her married name and ability to work in the U.S.

Can you get your ssn after you get married or do you have to do it before marriage?

Get one for her the day after she gets here in her maiden name. Then once you are married you go one more time to SS office and get the name changed. Not really that difficult. Not sure what the big deal is. Our wait times here at the SS office are like 10-15 minutes. I sat there with my wife with a smile on my face holding her hand...it was a wonerful thing sitting there with her, together. What's ten minutes compared to the time you spent waiting to get here here? Give me a break man! hahahahaha

God Bless

We received my wifes SSN after we were married using her passport and marriage certificate.

There was no problem getting it with her married name, just be sure to apply before the I-94 expires.
