That is up to you and whether you want to sit and wait for several hours just to get some wording removed from a card that hardly anybody sees. I know I have shown my SSC at most four times in my life. You memorize the number and just rattle it off to anybody that needs it. For employers you show them your GC or US passport and you do not need the SSC and DL. We will go back to the SSA only when my wife becomes a USC to updated her status. Until then her SSC reads "NOT VALID FOR WORK WITHOUT DHS AUTHORIZATION".

Your green card is your "DHS authorisation" so you do not have to go and get the wording removed unless you particularly enjoy waiting in queues.

As stated, once you naturalise then you do have go and get a new card.

For us the Calif. DMV requires a SSN and that the name matches the name on the GC, married name, so we went early, 10 minutes and got it changed.

You are talking about a name change and a requirement by a state agency and the OP is talking about the wording "NOT VALID FOR WORK WITHOUT DHS AUTHORIZATION" which the EAD or GC is. To get the DL you hard to go in and change the name on the SSC. The OP does not have to get the wording removed. Now if the OP wants to change his lastname to that of his wife's then a trip to the SSA would be in order, just don't forget the Marriage Certificate.
